Question Mileage Concern

What mpg should I expect from my 2002 SD F250 4X4 Crew, XLT 156 (short bed), 7.3L Diesel, 4-SPD Auto, 3.73 limited slip, Off Road Package? It now has about 7000 miles on it.

I seem to get about 13-14 miles per gallon driving around town, to and from work. Half freeway and half surface streets. Under 45-50 mph in the city I have the overdrive off (not as sluggish, fewer shifts)

On the highway I pull a 24" toy hauler(ramp trailer) which when loaded with my ATVs is about 7000 pounds. Four passengers and big dog. I drive with OD on the freeway flats, 60-62 mph, cruise control on. The toy hauler is a little wider and higher than most conventional RV trailers. I get only about 10-11 mpg. I was expecting better than this!

I would appreciate hearing from others any comparisons and/or letting me know if this is about normal or does my truck have a problem? Any suggestions?

Thanks for your thoughts and insights

Mark

I have a 2002 Excursion XLT 4X4 with the 7.3L and I usually get anywhere around 13-15mpg driving around town , allot of stop and go, and anywhere from 16-19 cruising on the tollway.

I would say you are normal as far as what you said your truck is getting , allot of guys up their actuall milage on these boards.

I would say you're right in line with most. Perhaps a little low, You may see an increase in milage after another 25,000 miles or so when everything gets broken in. It also depends a lot on how you drive it. There are a number of things you can do to improve it by say 1-4 mpg. Adding a preformance chip, cold air intake, and using stanadyne or similar fual additives. I tow a 13,000 lb 5th wheel and because of all the mods I've done I now get about 11 mpg when towing, that seems to be the same in town or on the open road. When not towing, 13 around town and 17 plus on the open hwy.

I have a 99 powerstroke and pull a 33 ft weekend warrior toy hauler that when loader is slightly over 9000 lbs....empty around town a some highway I get about 15 mpg and like 17 on long highway runs at 70 mph...when towing we cruise at 65-75 and hammer it on all the hills and I average 11 mpg...now with the scmt just recently installed at 80 hp setting its lower"not sure of the #'s" havent checked it yet....but might not be too bad if I could keep my foot out of it !!!!!

Your towing milage sounds about right. I'll get 14-15 pulling the boat or the flatbed, but when I hook up the 32' TT I rarely get better than 9-11. Historically (73,000 miles worth) I've gotten 17 empty, but that average is starting to creep up since I've modified the fuel system. You will pick up a little more as it breaks in.

I appreciate alot of the responses. I have just gotten a 2001 F-250 and was curious on the mileage I was getting. I put on about 60 miles a day going to work (alot of highway driving) and get around 19 mpg. I'm not too disappointed with that. In April we took a 31' TT from Augusta GA to St. Augustine and I got about 10 mpg. I was a little disappointed, but tempered it with the complaining I did because other people were going too slow on I-95.

With My 1997 PSD, Auto Trans., I believe 3.73 Rear End, Crew Cab 2 Wheel Drive, with 140,000 miles and I am right at 20 MPG on the hwy and around 17-17.5 in town. I have not pulled a load with it yet so I can't give any info on that. I am about to put a diablo Sport chip in the Truck Hope to get a 1-2 mpg better. I am using Lucas Fuel treatment which I can tell a power Gain and it seems to have gotton me about .5-1 mpg better fuel milage. Give it a try you can pick it up at any local Truck Stop (if you buy it in a large bottle the cost seems to be about .50 to treat 10 gal).

I think it's safe to say that with only 7000 miles on your truck it's not fully broken in yet. You should see a mileage improvement as you put on a few more miles.
