Hi all, I'm new to the group and I just bought an 84 f250 with a 6.9L in it. I haven't been able to take the steering column apart yet (I wont have the truck til later this week) but the transmission selector cable either needs adjustment or be replaced. Does anyone know where I can buy a new cable for this truck online? Thanks!

Reason: terminology corrected
I don't know where to buy on but my selector cable is bad as well. It is a very small diameter wire or maybe even string in a plastic sheath functions like a bicycle cable. The sheath gets brittle and breaks into pieces so the cable does not work well. Too much slack which makes the pointer off. At least that is what happened to my truck.

One thing I have noticed... I called a Ford dealer the locater thinger told me had a fuel line for my Tempo. The guy said: "The computer says we have it but I can't find it, it's probably on a pallet with a bunch of other old stuff in the back of the storeroom."
Point being, just because the computer says they have it, don't hold your breath....
The cable is replaceable if you can find a good one somewhere, as it's bolted on at the indicator end. Some people have also made their own. I'd search the forum for all avaliable options.
Only source for a replacement cable would be a wrecking yard, because as Bill said, they were not sold seperately.

Yeah I was recently told about a junk yard we have here locally that I'm definitely going to check out if its more than just an adjustment

See post 6. The shift indIcator dial comes with the cable. The 1980/86 non AOD indicator dial assy is available from Ford. Both the 1981/82 AOD & 1983/86 AOD dials are obsolete.
No one has the 1981/82 type, but there are 4 of the 1983/86 type available NOS
I have to wonder why anyone would go to a wrecking yard, strip the dash apart to get at the puppy. And, once it's found, will it be any good?
If not, move on to the next one. If you don't succeed the first time, try - try - try - try - try again.
OP lives in the high desert city of Lancaster. It was 96 degrees in Hacienda Slights today, I can just imagine how hot it is in Lancaster.
I was gonna whiz up to Acton tomorrow (Saturday), but Acton is close to Lancaster. So, it's too damn hot to visit Daphneyland to adopt another Basset Hound.

It has been hot here. We had a few cooler days when the clouds passed over from the storms north of here which was a nice little break.

Just listing avaliable options.
The new shift indicator dial does come with the cable yes, but you can unbolt that cable from the indicator. If you do have an AOD, you could find any type indicator in the wrecking yard and just swap the cables for example.
Finding one that's good might be a trick though, but still an option.
Well I got my truck today and took a look at the indicator cable. The cable is in good shape. The issue is with the tubing that the cable is inside of. It looks like over the years the tubing has cracked and fallen apart which has effected the proper cable tension.
So I'm with you, klricks. I figure I could come up with a new tubing and cut to the size it needs to be for the proper tension.
Thanks again to everyone for the advice and comments.
