Here is a brain teaser. Well, at least for me it's a brain teaser.
Here in the central valley of California, it is a typical summer, HOT. We don't get much cool off at night either. My son took the truck over to the coast where the temps were 40 degrees cooler, highs and lows. He noticed an oil stain under the engine and checked the dipstick. It was barely marking on the stick. I assumed HPOP lines or turbo, but he sent me a picture of the stain and it was not too much. So he bought some oil, topped it off and set out for home. He checked it 3 0r 4 times in 150 miles and the level never changed.
This morning I pull out the shop light and go over this thing with a finetooth comb. Oil level is good, valley is clean and dry (as clean and dry as any diesel would be) and I can find no sign of a HPOP or line leak. The turbo pedistal looks to be ok. The only thing that looks to be a little damp is the EBPV pushrod.
A clogged/ restrictive air filter can suck extra oil through the crankcase vent into the air intake. Even with a clean unrestricted intake it seems many here including me, use up to 4 quarts in a 5k oil change and it is somewhat normal. Oil brand and temperature can make it worse/better.
