i have recently dropped a monster 390 in my 1965 f-100. all was going well till i fried the wiring. im sure this was because the wiring was pretty ghetto in the first place. i purchased a wiring harness from haywire and it went in fairly easy. the problem is i can not get power from the coil to the distributer. the wire that goes to the coil is hot. and everthing is in the correct place. but when i turn the key, no fire. i have tried every trick i have picked up in the past years but nothing is working. i know the coil is good. it just wont spark. could this have somthing to do with the points??? any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
also anyone with questions on what to put in a 390 to make it really come alive with out killing your wallet let me know, my 65 really screams (when it runs)
coils can die for no real reason. I had three MSD blaster coils die in about 6 months with my truck. You also have a condenser in your distributer it will leave you with no spark. Check your points, but even if they are wrong you should have some spark.
I bet your truck came from the factory with a resistor before the coil. Without one the full 12 volts will be too much for the ignition system. I bet it is the condensor in the dizzy, they're cheap.
l also have a 65 F-100 with a 390. I put a Edelbrock performer 390 spreadbore intake, with a Holley 750 single pump. I run a Comp Cam with 6 degrees advance 494 lift & I think 168 duration. It has an electronic ignition, Which was a good move it came alive after that. I also put stock exhaust manifolds with 3" pipes, from the manifold the first 42" are 2 1/2", and stock 24" mufflers from I don't know what, they fit that's all I know,LOL. I would suggest a stall converter with the big horse I went thru that and I hated having to put it in neutural at stop signs. As for your spark problem I agree with millertime300. Good luck!
THANKS ALOT MILLERTIME, I WENT AND CHANGED OUT THE POINTS AND CONDENSER, AND SURE ENOUGH IT FIRED RIGHT UP! WHAT A RELIEF. NOW I DONT HAVE TO PUSH IT OFF A CLIFF, MY PATIENCE WAS WEARING THIN
