Hey guys, I was driving my truck last week and toward the end of a decent drive on a hot day after dropping off my trailer it started shifting really hard and at awkward times. Then I noticed the overdrive light was flashing. Got the truck home and have driven it several time since and no similar experience. I drove it to work today and everything seemed fine. When I started it after work it started flashing almost immediately. What could it be? I bought a new TPS recently but haven't installed it. The reason I bought on was because it has been shifting early for the most part and then occasionally will shift too late. I haven't had the truck long and after purchasing the TPS sensor and looking at receipts for the truck its been replaced recently. My thoughts are the maybe a new one was installed but not adjusted to the proper specifications. Any advice?
Skate,
There is a thread on here somewhere on how to check and adjust your FIPL, the diesel equivalent of the TPS on a gasser (stands for Fuel Injection Pump Lever or something like that) I'll see if I can find it for you. The blinking light indicates that your trans is in "Limp mode" you don't want to drive it like that. There is also a relatively inexpensive scanner you can buy that will read the codes your trans is sending to help with diagnosis. I am sure someone else will turn you on to which one you need. So far, I have not needed one!
The Electrical connections to the transmission are prone to corrosion, clean and dielectric grease. Try disconnecting the batteries to reset the computer. I've done this to clear up transmission issues and I pulled 6 horses in a steel stock over the fourth, shifted great.
Skates anyone got hay out your way for sale? Round bales.
Thanks for the suggestions, I will see where that gets me tonight. As for the round bales, I will call my aunt today and see what she knows. She has a bunch of mules, horses, donkeys, miniatures, and even a z-donk. She has to know where to get some. If not the Ste Gen County Fair is next weekend. If you can't find a connection there its hopeless. Also good for pork burgers, truck pulls, demo derby and other events.
I was thinking of taking the ole idi down there if I get it shifting right. Lol. Here is the list of events
Thanks for checking on the hay, I can wait to see if we get a second cutting this fall or run up to Iowa. Either way it can cost me. Would like to make the fair, could go for a tractor pull and a pork burger.
If you've done any research on these E4OD transmissions, they are aggravating at best. They get info from several different areas and if one is off it can throw the tranny into a confused tizzy.
I checked the voltages on the TPS before work and they seem to be off. I'm going to install the new sensor I have and adjust the proper values and go from there.
The tac is working fine. Changed out the TPS tonight and checked the voltages on each comparing them to what I printed from a post on this forum. The only difference that I noticed was the top wire which I think should be a constant 5 volts does not read anything and the bottom wire which I thought should be the ground reads 5 volts. I adjusted the sensor on the bracket until the middle wire reached the recommended values from the post. Took the truck for a little spin and seemed to shift well and no flashing light yet. The flashing light has been intermittent so I really hope I don't see that anymore because when that happens it shifts super hard and real erratic. Thanks for the help guys, I'm going to get this idi rockin soon.
checking the TPS was a good idea.but it's a good idea to get the code.can get one just about any auto parts store,or better yet grab this little bugger and wont even even need to count the beeps/flashes: http://www.amazon.com/Equus-3145-For.../dp/B000EW0KHW
very easy to use.pretty much all the scanners come with instructions with the codes lists too so you don't even need to look 'em up online really.everyone with an E40D needs one imho.sometimes a code will just help point ya in the right direction, but it will help you and everyone here trying to help you too.
Yesterday I cleaned the contacts on the wiring harnesses on my transmission, rear end and on the TPS. Lets hope that takes care of things. If not I bought a code reader that will help me get a better idea of where to look. Thanks for all the help guys! I will drive her today and see what happens. I think there needs to be a whole new forum on the E4OD. LOL
The only difference that I noticed was the top wire which I think should be a constant 5 volts does not read anything and the bottom wire which I thought should be the ground reads 5 volts. I adjusted the sensor on the bracket until the middle wire reached the recommended values from the post. .
Mine is the same way top is ground bottom is 5 volts, Middle is my adjustment volts....Its a typo on the sheet or theres two versions I flipped it to the way it says and it doesnt work....So I put it back, Mine still had the Ford factory TPS.
Drove my truck for a bit today and no symptoms the light flashing or erratic shifting, but the problem has been intermittent. I ran my code reader when I got home for the first time since I got it yesterday and they only code was 23 i believe which indicates improper FILP values. I just put the new sensor on the other day and the wire that has a variable value relating to throttle position I get 1.18 to 3.92. Does that sound acceptable or would that slight bit really make that much difference?
Whats your shift points? I'm shifting at 1700-2000 depending on how hard I'm on the throttle and going into over drive at 42mph with about the same setting, Works great and getting 14.6 mpg in city...If I go any lower I get torque converter shutter
