I just ordered a Fuel Pump Regulator and Pressure Gauge. Thinking the electric pump is putting out too much pressure. We will see if that helps. I still haven't fixed the exhaust. Wee bit loud right now...

Well, if the old thread had not been brought back to life, we would have forgotten the wisdom of Gouge Eye.
Ranger, I have read your symptoms and the responses of the guys. All are good. Here are a few thoughts:
You talk about backfire through the carb and a muffler explosion. You may be hanging valves. Get a can of Marvel Mystery Oil and follow directions for the crankcase and gasoline.
How much weight do you have on the chain that hangs from the ignition key? If your switch is old the dangling weight may disconnect the ignition switch intermittently.
A muffler explosion suggests a break in the ignition path that comes back to life after fuel loads in the exhaust system. The ignition switch, connections, point settings, distributor grounds are suspect.
Give a try and report back.
Thanks for the response. But it was resolved years ago. It was an electric fuel pump dumping in too much fuel. Installed a regulator. Problem solved. Thanks though.
