i have a 99 f250 with the 4.6... my problem started with funny shifting on the highway and rpm would race kinda funny while maintaining speed... when i got off the highway i noticed it was starting to stall at stops and while slowing down... replaced solenoids in transmission there was no metal in my fluid fluid did smell old however! put new filter in and fluid thought i was going to be all set.... thought!!! put it in reverse worked fine put it in drive stalled imediately! disconected the battery tried again didnt stall in drive the first time but when i put it in park and back to drive stalled out... could this be a reflash issue tcm and pcm or should i just drive it off a cliff? im not generally a ford guy im more partial to chevy but this is the second ford i bout and the second one to die within a month of purchas! the first one was a crown vic that ended up eating 9k before i finally got sick of dumping money into somthing that was at the for dealer and didnt do anything for me and the dealer bought it for 400$ i really do love my truck though and it is kinda what puts the grub on the table for me and my family so it being down is really hurting especially scince im up to about a g in parts so far... did mass airflow charge air temp tranny solenoids and filter air filter with k&n and K&n oil filter.... i just dont know sombody give me some insight
First mistake is throwing parts at it.
Get the codes read with a scanner not a reader.
This is why codes are used to make decisions and ID the issue area first.
The lock up clutch could be in trouble or even the internal diode function.
If the lockup is in trouble it will show as a code.
The diode is mechanical so you feel it as drive tran lockup to the motor.
The speed up in rpm would be a normal result of an unlocked torque converter condition because it puts the converter back into normal fluid slip conditions. That's worth an increase of about 300 rpm +/-.
BTW, buying older vehichles expect anything. It's not that it's a Ford but any like vehichle or make can have the same net result.
Good luck.
Check motor mounts. Is the engine shifting when going from neutral to drive and neutral to reverse. It could be stress put on a wire or the intake air plenum when the truck is going into drive. The engine will shift in one direction going into reverse and the other direction going into drive. Have someone shift from neutral to reverse and neutral to drive and observe any movement of the engine and look for stress on wires, plenum, etc.
i did scan codes before putting parts in it im not a complete dope.... sometimes... i do have upstream and downstream o2 sensor codes could be messing up the trim but i feel that scince it only does it in drive it is an electrical problem.... definately going to see if there are stressed wires on the intake that sound logical because when it stalls it sounds like its starving for fule. but i was wondering if scince i replaced the solenoids if its still doing that because i have not reset pcm and tcm.
and i generally do buy older vehicles and i do some work as expected but nothing requires as much as the fords! i had a 92 lumina replaced the starter bought it for 400$ drove it for a year put 15k on it! ( i know i drive alot) it had over 400k on it when i drove it to the junk yard and got 300$ back and i only junked it because i broke the door handle and tried to glue it back together and ended up super gluing the door closed and when i tried to pry it open i broke the window and ended up with the dukes of hazzard lumina... like i said im not a dope sometimes... lol 86 monte had 500k on it when tranny went and my 91 blazer had 270K cant get a ford up to 200 and i know there not all bad i just have bad luck with fords! the crown vic split the intake manifold at 110k i did have a merc tracer had 150k and ran fine... kinda but i gave it away
