This one lonesome speaker is sitting here- is that factory? It had a little SONY sticker that fell off... Also, was there supposed to be a radio in this hole? it has a little keyhole...
This radio hole may not be factory, but it does have a keyhole next to it, and that's what I was curious about. I thought I had seen this same dash setup in a MAC's catalog; I must've been wrong. If this is an aftermarket radio install, it does suck that they cut through dash to do it, but at least it is not hacked. it looks almost as though it was machined. Weird, but thanks for letting me know.
The key hole may be for the radio (two way) he mounted in there. Look in the hole, maybe it had some sort of lock mechanism to secure the radio so it couldn't be stolen, but removed easily. I seem to recall seeing stuff like that back in the late '70's.
So you're saying for maybe a CB radio or something like that? Interesting... this truck is from Montana and my grandfather did have a CB in the 77 IH scout that my brother now has... Perhaps it had one of those. Anyway, I think it's interesting. This truck has all kinds of interesting stuff like this- it even has an original wooden Omaha Standard livestock carrier on it.
You know many of these old trucks were used for work( imagine that – LOL) and they were adapted to the users needs – sometimes even professionally. They didn’t care about the preservation just how to get the job done. Although it may not conform to our desire to preserve the history of these trucks, yours has a character and a story all its own – wish these things could talk. Its fun working on them trying to figure out the history. Since this was your grandpaps, that makes it even better in my opinion. Wish I could say that about mine. Good luck with it….
Thanks, man, I appreciate that. It makes it unique- when I first posted pics of it on here, I had some people telling me the truck had been wrecked because it didn't have "period correct fenders" or some such nonsense on it. My grandpa owned the truck from its conception, so THAT never happened. But what did happen? That's the fun of it. There is all kinds of history in every antique.
my truck has holes all over the place top of dash, face of dash and all over the roof of cab po(state of cal) put radio's lights every where!some i use some i fill some i miss later and get pissed off
roy
I like the CB radio idea the best. It fits the history of the truck better. I mean, it's a truck, not a perfect show car; it runs great, looks nice, and it has been in my family for a long time. I might put a stereo in that hole, for now it holds Dr. Peppers just fine.
Every truck has its own character; and it be cool if you could find an old 70's CB with a PA system and install in the dash; but then you would have to modifi a spot for the DPepper.
