Exhaust cleaning...or more commonly called regen or the proper term (shows on your dash briefing) "cleaning exhaust filter".
This is the cleaning of the diesel particulate filter or DPF. The DPF is designed to catch the soot from your exhaust and trap it. Once the DPF is full of soot then a regen is triggered to burn off the soot.
The soot is burned off during this regen by a process of injecting raw fuel on the exhaust stroke. This fuel is sent down the exhaust to the dpf where it superheats the dpf and burns the soot.
Normal regens are considered anywhere from a 100 miles to as much as 630 between intervals. Towing will drastically change the interval as well as fuel quality and your actual driving conditions.
