Hello I have owned two Bronco's in the past and wished I never sold them off. Now I want another one. I am looking for a 87-96 and because of the prices I will probably end up with one 91 or older. My question is what year would be the best, I would like to convert it to MASS air and keep the engine pretty much stock. Also I would like to maybe raise it no more than 2" or just make it sit level in the front. 1990 and newer models have a data port for the computer does that mean that earlier models would not take well to a MASS air conversion? Also was the standard transfercase for all 87-92's the B&W 1356 even with a standard transmission? What standard transmissions were avilable, 4,5 Speed? Do the standard transmissions have an altra low first gear, do you take off in 1st, or 2nd while normal driving? Are the 87-91's idenical besides the computers?
I think Mass Air wasn't offered until 95/96, and prior models used Speed Density. I know after 1992, the Broncos quit using a speedometer cable, so I would think M.A. would work best with 93/94 models. Maybe someone with more experience with these will be able to help you out?
'84-90 EFI engines & computers are basically identical, and in '91, only the fuel pumps changed but that system is MUCH better, so stay with '91-up. The computer didn't change significantly from '84-95, except the '94-95 California MAF V-8s. In '96, all gas engines were MAF. '92-96 had the ignition module on the inner fender, which is far superior, and can be retrofitted.
The 1356 was the only t-case in those years, and it fits on all 4WD FS truck transmissions from '80-96. Manuals included the NP-435, BW T-18/19 (all 3 with granny but no OD), Mazda M5OD (common, but considered weak), & the ZF S5-42 with granny AND OD (the smallblock 4WD version is VERY expensive & rare).
'93-96 Broncos had 4WABS & an electronic cruise servo, which are MUCH better than the older systems, so that's the range I'd recommend.
If you look thru the photo albums in my sig link, you'll see that I've added the good stuff from '80-96 to my truck, and it's not that difficult to build exactly what you want from ANY Bronco.
Thanks for all of the great information, I do like the looks of the 92+ bodystyle, maybe I'll look for one that year. drittler I live in CO, otherwise I'd check out your 91.
