I don't like things that are more difficult than they need to be. And I got annoyed by having to unbolt my coolant filter to get the element loosened and removed. I can barely get a filter wrench on it and then when it is loose it won't come up out of there. Why the heck did it have to be tucked so far down in there? No good reason.
So I relocated it upward with a simple sub-plate. Now I can get my hands around it, and it will easily pull up and out without spilling.
I didn't have any 3" wide stock around the home shop, so I grabbed a Simpson tie plate from Home Depot. This turned out to be a stroke of genius because the plate is the exact width of 3", and the nail holes are the correct center distance to fit the bracket. Just drill them out to 13/32", then cut the excess plate ends off. That lifts the filter head 2-5/8". It doesn't touch the hood, and is still below the top of the radiator.

Cost about $2 including bolts.
