Just today the truck was hard to start hot. didnt have a problem yesterday, also when cruising in 3rd,barely on the pedal down a residential street, the truck magically accelerated by itself for a second. Im assuming i got air coming into the system, and when it accelerated something sealed and it got full juice?
the fuel filter looks fairly new on the engine, but i do have a new one. Think im going to take the filter off, drain the water separator, put new one on, fill with diesel kleen, and see how that goes. also have yet to inspect the air filter
You didn't have low fuel in the tank you were running on did you? If it sucked a little air from the tank, the pump will compress the air, and when the injectors pop with the air behind the fuel, it will spray more fuel untill the air is no longer compressed. Resulting in the little power spurt.
Hard start when hot and power surge can be caused by a tired pump and fuel returns. These pumps are rated for 100K miles. Next time you have a hard start when hot pour some tepid water over the IP to cool it down, I heard of a guy drove with a bag of ice on his IP to make it home. Start saving for an IP and injectors.
The tanks have a shower head looking thing on the fuel pickup in the tank. They don't age well, and they crack and fall off letting you run out of fuel at around a quarter tank of fuel. If they dont fall off, the crack will let the lift pump suck air and will result in the power surge you stated. Or if the tank was really low and you turned a corner the fuel could have sloshed away from the pickup tube and sucked some air. The hard start could be attributed to it sucking a little air. I've never heard of a power surge from a tired pump. Hard starting when hot, low power, but not a power surge.
pick-up tubes and air-intrusion plus bad GP's thats what was wrong with my truck.
Same power surge uphill, hard starting, etc
When hard-starting or after it's been sitting awhile see if fuel filter is full or kind of empty-
half-full etc means air-intrusion somewhere behind the filter.
any wet looking return lines on engine?
mine had a leak where the return line hooked to front tank and symptoms would only appear sporadically.
you must fix the pick-up tubes as all these trucks have that issue and you will have to replace/repair that problem sooner or later even if they're not broke now they will be.
Broken pickups are annoying but not a must. I've lived with mine for 2 years, I just need to switch tanks or fill up before a 1/4 of a tank. (it don't hurt so bad at the fuel pump, just more frequently)
Greg,If you have more than 100K on your Ip and injectors, plan on doing those soon. your engine starts fine cold, GPs wouldn't be a concern. Lift pump you can check fuel pressure and volume at the valve on the filter head
i hve a used recent reman from international pump (exact same as mine), but its been sitting dry for a while..will it still be good? Injectors and return line kit seems to only ne sround 180 bucks.
im also willing to bet the pump is tired and needs replacing. Truck has 270k miles, so even if it was replaved at 100k, it does not look like the engine has been touched in the last 70k..

You certainly can give it a try, worst that can happen is you'll have to redo it if it's bad. practice makes perfect.
You might want to pour some ATF or something into the IP and spin it a few times, then fill it up again plug all the orifices and let it set until you put it on or take it some where and have it tested.
I would install the IP with the old injectors, reason is if it's going to throw some crud I'm not clogging up my new ones.
