Keep AFE air filter kit?

My truck came with this AFE kit on it when I bought it: Cold Air Intake System Stage 2 Magnum FORCE Stage 2 Intake System PRO 5R; Ford Diesel Trucks 03-07 V8-6.0L (td) 54-11022 - aFe Power

It's a nice kit, big air filter, housing, battery is turned 90 degrees to allow it all to fit, tubes all the way back to the turbo. I'm not a huge fan of this type of filter, so I am thinking of should I change back to stock. The problem is - this is a whole lot of stuff to change back, and I don't have ANY of the stock parts...

What would you do? Edit - I've looked, to no avail, for a stock setup and can't find one sitting around complete, for sale...

I would, at the very least, try and find a stock setup.

I see what you mean. Your gonna need to find a truck in a local wrecking yard to scrounge all the parts and fasteners from. Tough call. I would be religious about servicing it and careful not to over oil it and keep an eye out for the parts for the Donaldson set-up. 13hp and 67ft/lbs of torque (at who knows what RPM) doesn't seem worth a turbo.

Gotta love a contentious man... I was out at the truck putting the ownership papers in the owners manual, looked inside the warranty book, and there is the first owner's full contact information. Called him up, and the original air filter setup is all there, up in his attic. Going to pick it up tomorrow...

Lucky guy! I wish I would have kept all my stock air intake stuff instead of listening to all the hype when I first bought the truck new. I do run an AFE but I run it with the ProGuard 7 Filter and change it often. I would trade it back for the factory setup in a heartbeat.

I have an AFE filter as well but I kept my stock filter. I didn't have to make any modifications. Is the stock filter that much better? I know I didnt get a boost in fuel economy like I thought I would. Should I go back to stock?

The stock set-up is one of the things they got right on this truck. It's kinda clunky looking compared to some of the aftermarket systems but it's not restrictive (like on many gassers) and it filters great.

I would if I still had the original intake and such. I have replaced one turbo and there was a little bit of dusting on the impeller. All the claims of increased horsepower and mileage were bogus. Or if it was there it sure wasn't noticeable. I didn't have my OEM setup anymore so I just went and put on a better filter. It had a Proguard 5 filter originally and I just put on a Proguard 7 (2 extra layers of protection). So far so good! All this intake did was make the turbo howl a bit more.

I suspect the measurements for the horsepower/torque claims are taken at higher RPM's and boost levels than my truck will ever see. If you're building a competition truck for racing, pulling, or showing the aftermarket stuff would be the way to go.

I just got back from picking up the original OEM setup from the original owner - what a bunch of stuff! What I don't know is if the OEM filter is the big plastic housing with the element inside, complete, or does the element come out of that housing? Also - there is a hard plastic tube with a sensor hole in it, and a flexible accordion pleat tube - what order do they go in? Which hooks to the filter and which clamps on the turbo?

The filter is the whole piece. The rubbery tube with the worm clamp goes toward the turbo and the piece with the flared-kinda bell shape goes through the radiator support. Is the mount still in the truck? The top of the filter has an arrow that points toward the turbo.
