Noticed battery smelling like sulfur and no water in terminals. Replaced alt and batt. Still happening, so I replaced volt reg, still overcharging @ 16-17 volts... Any reason why this is occuring?
When the wrong alternator has been installed in a stock vehicle or if the pulley has undersized dimensions (causing extra alternator rotation), the charging supply will be higher than the demand and cause an overcharged state. Parts house didn't sell you a higher amp alternator than you needed and tell you it will work or even possibly sell you one with internal regulator I hope. As far as the external regulator it has three electromagnetic contact switches inside its housing that open and close. A stuck contact switch that refuses to disengage will cause an overcharging problem. Keep it posted.
