Electric fan options

My fan shroud is gone so I want to get a electric fan for my 78 F-250 400cid. I have A/C and a auto trany. I want to get a fan that will keep it all cool in this texas heat. Will I need two fans? One pushing through the A/C and one pulling through the radiator?

Any sugestions on size or who has good prices.

Thanks Bill

Check in the 67-72 forum.
A guy just installed an electric fan in his truck.

It would be a lot better to get a used shroud from a scrap yard and put all the OEM stuff back on.

If you go electric you'll need a big old noisy 15". Unfortunately you will still need a shroud. I just built one for my aluminum radiator because I was unhappy with the cooling during severe use.

I will post some pictures of my creation soon. It seems like it is going to make a large difference. I have come to the conclusion the the shroud has more impact than the fan or radiator type.

The cheapest route would be to find a shroud from salvage or Jeff's Bronco Grave Yard etc. You could still add an electric for extra cooling if you have room. With A.C. there no room in front of mine. It could mount inside the shroud on the back of the radiator but it would be roasting in H*ll all the time. Don't know if it would last.

I put a 3" lift on it a few years back. In order to put the shroud back on it I would have to lift the motor 3" to line up with the shroud. If I can find the right shroud, a few years back I could not for the life of me. I guess on my days off I could scower the yards again.

Can you drop the radiator 3"? -I don't know I am not looking at my truck at the moment since it is storming outside. I have a 78 like yours but it is a 2WD standard trans.

Thats just crazy enough it just might work. If I drill a few holes buta bing. It will put my fill whole kinda in a odd place behind the radiator support, but I like it better than lifting my drive train.

You will need to make sure the radiator support is still sealed to keep the air flowing thru the radiator and not around it while driving.

I am also considering an electric fan. I was trying to squeze every bit of power out of a 351M/400 I could. Plus I am all into custom fabbing everything. Its cool when you show your friends your truck and they are all like "cool... it comes with that?!?" and "wow were did you get that" and your answer is "oh I built that last weekend in the garage" anyways...

I saw in Summit Racing a Perma cool fan that was only 14" and rated at 2,950 cfm. That was like double the cfm of any other 14" fan I have seen. And its also one of the cheapest at about $84. But still worrying that alone wont be enough, I measured the radiator on my 78 bronco and I think I can squeeze two of em in there diagonaly. But then I remembered too I want a bigger radiator (because half the cooling problem is the crappy stock radiator that can barely cool a moderately built motor). The modine radiator I read about in a cooling system upgrade article somewere is alot taller and supposed to be an easy install. So there should be enough room for dual 14's I would think. I am not sure about needing a fan shroud. With the modine radiator and about 6,000 cfm of air I would think thats enough but I am not the cooling expert. Also I was wondering, with an elcetric fan does it have to be on the motor side of the radiator? Or could you put it between the grille and radiator... freeing up space inside and leaving you piece of mind when your sticking your hand down in there with the motor running Any thoughts?
