I'm installing controls in the cab. The PO had the interior and the firewall painted. The rest of the cab is primer. I've read here that enamel chips easily. It's true. Everywhere I tighten a fastener against it, no matter how careful, it chips badly. The benzels on the dash are a savior but the firewall isn't fairing well. I was searching the net for vermillion red enamel for touch up. Ford tractor paint in vermillion is available but have to buy a quart.
I have always used the petrolium jelly trick (vasaline). Put a little on both parts, snug it down and then wipe it clean. I have done this on freshly painted Model A wheels, it should work/help on the dash and firewall.
chipping can be reduced with any paint by using the right undercoat procedures and materials. Overpainting old original paint is asking for chipping problems. Start by removing any old paint and primer, wash 2 or 3 times with a good degreaser (I use a triple strength solution of Simple Green and hot water with a stiff scrub brush. Lestoil is also good.) Finally flush surface with prepsol or acetone. Use a good self etching primer from the same company as the top coat if using spray cans, or the SEP or 2K epoxy primer if spraying. Follow top coating times and directions when applying the top coat(s). Enamel is very sensitive to recoat time window. Allow to off gas and harden at least a week before bolting together.
