I been having this problem for about 6 months and have changed the following items (some twice):
Battery
Starter
Solenoid
Battery Cables
Coil
Starter Cable
Engine Ground
Distributer Cap and Rotor
Iginition
Ignition Control Box
My problem is once I change(d) these items my pickup would start just fine for a couple of days, then I would begin to notice that it would only fire when I let off the key while cranking and then it would sputter and occasionally start. Is this problem indicative of a bad pickup coil? Once it starts it runs fine, its just getting it to start before burning out starter or solenoid.
Turn the key to "ON" DO NOT START...Go out and with a screw driver and jump the solenoid to make it turn over and pump the gas a few times to see if it fires...If it does its the ignition switch...If it does not pull off a plug wire to see if theres spark, If not try hot wiring around wiring directly to the box from the battery....That will rule out everything up to the dist and the ign box..
Letting off the key tells me its the ignition switch... Or a bad wire going into the body of the switch....But try that first.
When the solenoid closes there is 12v direct to the coil for starting, from the "I" terminal of the solenoid.
Since his truck wants to start when he releases the key to 'run' the problem is in that circuit.
It could be a bad connection/broken wire at the "I" terminal inside the solenoid or it could be the wire itself that runs from the solenoid to the coil.
Ignition switch has nothing to do with it as it only closes the starter solenoid, in this circuit anyway.
So if the starter is turning and the truck only fires when he releases the key to 'run', the problem is in the connection/wiring, or solenoid itself.
Put the jumper wire from battery to + side of coil and it starts like a champ. Now I need to trace where the wire goes to and replace it. I think LMC has the complete assembly for sale.
