Thanks for all of the help. I think you guys saved me from writing a $1200 check to the repair shop. I ran straight Diesel Kleen for 30 seconds, shut her down over night, fired it up the next morning and drove it hard. Problem solved. Starts and idles fine now.
I have a new problem though. There is diesel leaking from the lines around the lift pump. I tried tightening the clamps, but it is still dripping. These lines were not leaking before I took it into the shop. I am going to replace the rubber lines on and around the lift pump. I've never done this work myself on a diesel, so I am unsure of the process. I've never bled the system either. There is a shrader valve on the filter housing. Any tips?
Well, Idk know how much bleeding youll have to do, but I would make sure the bolts that connect the lift pump to the block are on fairly snug, I just pulled my lift pump a couple days ago, and was surprised at how easy they came off, I mean I think i may have been able to break them loose with my hands, regardless, check all your your connections, In particular the metal fuel line that runs up to your filter it may look tight but could use torquing.
Btw, I thought you bypassed your mechanical pump and are just using your electric pump?

I didn't go there. I started with the Diesel Kleen treatment, and that seems to have cleared it up. I still can't believe this worked so well. I was contemplating scrapping the truck if I had to put $1200 into it - that's probably what is worth when it's running. You guys saved this one from the scrap yard.
Well since I couldn't find a good haynes manual I decided I would have to stick with these guys they are alright every once in a while i suppose, (im still looking for that manual ) Just kidding of course, my truck would have about 300 rounds in it and be a big burnt pile of charred metal
