I'm glad removing the belt solved the problem... It had to be a circus of circumstances. I mean you slow down, lowering the RPM JUST at the time the AC pump decides to die, killing the engine. That's actually pretty cool. It would have sucked at 75 mph on the highway. I've never taken one apart, but since you're looking at a new A/C compressor anyway, why not take that one apart and see if it can be fixed? While drinking beer of course.

#1 truck would blow cold air on idel then under load it would worm up
#2 i bought this r-4 sheet from auto zone.set the ambeant temp acording to instructions and comensed to emptying the canaster into the truck.
#3 the next day i was at a auto shop hearing the guy tell me i over filled it and they had to vacum it all out.so they did.
#4 they next day truck qwit after starting it up in a parking lot.one loud sqweel and bump no more run.

This thread is one of the best I've read lately, mainly because both of you posted the symptoms and cures as soon as you found them, thanks. I'm sure this is not an uncommon problem and I know that if and when my turn with this issue comes, I'll thank the both of you. As for the why and how that this stops the motor cold, everyone needs to realize just how hard these serpentine belts grab. I have a '68 Mustang with a healthy small block and an older v-belt setup. At idle, If I whack the throttle it responds instantly and revs quick enough to howl the fan belt. The V belts have much less contact area, and only ride on about 90 degrees of the pulleys circumference, whereas a serpentine drive sometimes rides on 270 degrees of the accessory it drives, plus they are lots wider for more contact area.

that doesn't make sense. if the a/c pump seized the belt should have broke there's no way that stopping crankshaft from turning. a seized pull or belt will melt that belt in a few seconds or at least shred it. Only think i can think is computer sensed alternator wasn't working so maybe it shut truck engine down????

I hope your right. that would suck if engine is bad. maybe your overheating.

There have been posts down in the V10 forum over the years about frozen A/C compressors causing the engine not to run. The serpentine belt is wrapped around the compressor pretty well and your not making a lot of torque at idle speed thus the engine doesn't wan to run. They hold pretty well at low rpm. You can get the belt to squeal a little at high rpms with a very firm shift.(done that before)

If I would have read this thread yesterday when it was first posted I would have suggested taking the belt off lol. Same exact thing happened on my 94 bronco!

Great.

I will put this in my book of things to look for when my v10 fails.
Congrate on the fix!

AZ is great for Deer and Elk. I just got into bow hunting this year. Its a big change for me. It ups the skill level required.

just wondering - if the compressor freezes - can't you just turn off the a/c, so the clutch will allow the pully to turn??...and if you are thinking of getting a belt bypass - why not take front of clutch off & replace just the pully bearing, cheaper than bypass & you don't have to change belt - etc....J...
