Being a poor Calif. resident, my 79 has to have 'em to pass. Located on the outside of the passenger side frame rail. Both are plastic. Truck is Calif smog rated. Any sign of gas on 'em and they'll fail the visual smog inspection...Grrrrr!

My 77.5 F250 came with dual tanks, one steel tank behind rear axle between frame and plastic aux. tank on drivers side with heavy steel skid/rock guard. Front aux tank and guard removed.

My 1974 VW SuperBeetle had the same canister under the right rear fender. I never knew or heard of them being installed on American vehicles. I learn more everyday on this site
