Hello All Newby here
Just bought a 2008 F350 to haul a 5th wheel camper with. The dealer had just installed new Procomp Extreme tires. Size 35-12.5-20. I dont know if it is the tires but I find I am constantly having to correct the steering as I drive, it seems like it tends to wander all over the road and I have to pay constant attention to it. It has just 100k miles. I am wondering if the steering stabilizer has reached end of life. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them. It is going in for an inspection tomorrow and they will give it a thourogh once over.
They need to check the ball joints, drag link and tie-rod ends. Is there play in the steering wheel ?. have someone rock the wheel left to right and see how far it will turn before the wheels start to move. look under the truck at the tie-rod ends is there movement slightly after the steering wheel is turned ?. look at the pitman arm off the steering box. how far will the steering wheel move before the arm moves ?. Is the truck geared to pull 35's ? It will kill you mileage if its not !.
On that topic the computer says I am getting about 12.4 mpg. The tires are way more than what I will ever need and was thinking of trying to sell them. They go for $460.00 each. A BF Goodrich standard OEM size 275-65-20 is 34.1 inches in diameter. Will that .9 inches make that much of a difference? What can I expect for mileage. 12.4 does seem low. It is the 6.4 diesel.
Yes, the .9 inches does make a difference. I went from the stock 265 BFGs to a 285 (about 1 inch taller) and noticed a sizable decrease in torque when towing, not to mention the wider tire has a lot more drag.
