70 Crew Cab aux. fuel tank

I removed my aux. tank today and it appears to be an oddball accordning to all the aux. tank diagrams I've found. I ordered a build sheet for this truck and it does not mention an aux. tank so I assume this to be a dealer add on. I've spoke with another crew cab owner and his '69 Crew has the same setup, he hasn't replaced the rubber parts yet. The tank looked good inside so I will be reusing it. No one has the rubber hoses this setup uses. I wondered if anyone has seen this setup before and replaced any of the hoses. The vent tube consist of about a 5/8" hose attached to the filler tube, it transitions to about a 5/16" hose to attach to the top of the tank. Picture below. They used a formed hose for the transition at the tank, it is a 90 with 5/16 on one end and 5/8 on the other. They used a piece of tubing to connect the hoses.

I think I will put a long piece of 5/16 hose on the tank, long enough to go over the frame rail, then see if I can find a 5/16 to 5/8 brass nipple and use that with a piece of 5/8 hose to attach to the filler tube.
Here is the sending unit.

Here is the tank. The fuel pick up tube is to the far right, the vent is next to it. I'm sure this is just like your tank.

This has me puzzled. The top 90 shown here is actually hose (see second photo). No one that I've found makes this hose. I bought a hose kit for a 66-72 truck with aux. tank but it isn't correct for this tank. As you mentioned maybe we can find this down at the parts store, but wouldn't it have to be for gas service. I don't think a radiator hose will work but I may be wrong. I'm going to talk to the muffler shop, it seems to me if I removed the filler tube assembled that they should be able to form and weld a piece of pipe in place of the rubber hose.

What are your thoughts?

NumberDummy, have you seen this setup?

I will be using ethonol gas from time to time so I'm afraid of using NOS parts, I've heard today's gas will eat up older hoses.

Go to an industrial hose supplier for your hose. My son had to do that for the filler hose for his 93 Escort stock car.

1967 was the first year that FoMoCo offered an auxillary fuel tank for F100/350 Stylesides (only).

1967/72 F100/350 25 gallon auxillary fuel tank is located on the inside of the left (drivers) side frame rail.

1967/69: The exposed fuel cap pokes thru the left quarter panel (bedside) above the scallop (bumpside) line, in front of the left rear wheel.

1970/72: The exposed fuel cap pokes thru the left quarter panel below the scallop line, in front of the left rear wheel.

Inside the bed, butted up against the quarter panel, is a steel shield that protects the fuel filler tube from possible cargo damage.

On the floor, adjacent to the drivers side of the seat, is a manually operated fuel tank selector valve.

Below the dash, to the left of the steering column mounted to a bracket is a switch that changes the dash fuel gauge from the in-cab tank to the auxillary tank.

The switch bezel is marked L FUEL TANK R

FoMoCo Dealers usually did not install aftermarket fuel tanks, because there was no way to warranty them.

If a part failed, they would have pay for the part and the labor to R&R it out of their own pockets, then attempt to get their money back from the aftermarket source they bought the parts from.

I've found 8 crew cabs with my oddball tank. Some installed at the Ontario plant and some apparently by dealers as they are not on the Marti reports. They are as you say, mounted inside frame rails, 25 gal. They just have the inlet on the lower side instead of the top. I'm going to be able to piece together a 90 and connect it all with hose and clamps and make it work.

I got the tank back from the radiator shop and low and behold I found something. Someone must have painted over these, but there were numbers painted on the tank. I can see the outline of them. There are a set of numbers that appears to be 24 88 and another set that reads D0TA-9002-D.

NumberDummy found some info on these mysterious crew cab aux. fuel tanks:

Marked: D0TA-9002-D = Ford part number: D0TZ-9002-F replaced by C5TZ-9002-A .. 17 Gallon Fuel Tank.

Applications: 1965/69 F100/350 body styles 84 & 85 / 1965/72 P Series Parcel Delivery / 1970/71 F250, body style 85 / 1970/71 F350 body styles 84 & 85

P Series: The front doors slide back/forth, all the sheet metal behind the front seat was installed by aftermarket body makers. Commonly called "bread trucks" because so many bakeries (Frito-Lay for an example) used them

Body style 84: Open Drive-Away Chassis & Cowl. No cab of any kind.

Body style 85: Open Drive-Away Chassis & Windshield. No cab of any kind.

Both were used as ice cream trucks......

make sure to mention that there is no parts catalog reference for these tanks other than P Series and Open Drive-Away's.

Also mention that the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog does not have ANY specific to 1965/72 factory Crew Cab parts listed = N-O-N-E = NONE!

It's like they never existed.
"

Thanks for the help NumberDummy!!

Here is a picture of my filler pipe with the new hose in place. I found a formed fuel filler hose at O'Reilly's, it is Gates #24717. The upper filler neck is just over 2" and the lower pipe is 1.8". The formed hose is 2" inside, it was tough getting it on the upper and it fits snug on the lower. For the vent I will attache 1/2" fuel hose to the tank, insert a 5/8" x 3/4" heater hose adapter, then run 3/4" fuel hose to the filler neck vent connection.

I plan to install it all back on the truck this weekend. My sending unit seems fine, I will connect it to the truck before I install and test it. I bought a "solid" design float from Dennis Carpenter just in case. The original seems fine but I feel better replacing it while it's out.

I've developed a leak in this fuel tank so I'm going to try and replace it with the 25 gal. aux tank normally used. My brackets seem to be the same as the standard cab. The metal fuel filler I have is the same one used on the reg cab trucks and it's in the same position so hopefully everything will work out.

The C5TZ-9002-A tank is the same, but...the mounting brackets, fuel filler tube and etc are not the same F100/350 vs P Series Parcel Delivery.

Notice the Open Drive-Away's along with the P Series and etc..

Thanks. I'm going to get the 25 gal repop tank and see what it takes to mount it. My filler pipe is the same as a std cab F-series and its in the same location.

Due to the location of the auxillary tank fuel filler tube in 1967/69 vs 1970/72, there cannot be one tank that fits all, since 1967/69 uses a different tank/filler tube than 1970/72.

And who is reproducing any auxillary tank? AFAIK, only the in-cab tank is reproduced.

LMC offers a 22.5 gal version to replace the 25 gal tanks. I'll order one for a '70 since my fill neck is below the scallop.
