Move oil filter location?

I saw a couple of these items in a summit catalog and was wondering if anyone has installed on in their Bronco?

Mine is a 1994 XLT 5.8 and actually a pain because no matter how simple the drain is..... and no matter how hard I try not to make a mess from the drainpan, the filter always manages to make a puddle in my garage and add a nice layer of crud on my axle.

I saw this item and thought... well I understand the idea, but is installing this going to be the cause of a new nightmares? (truck runs perfect now) And is it going to be a real pain to install... not clutz mechanic pain, but just tedius pain.... like when I changed plugs/wires/cap - I spend at least 2 ours scratching up my arm and hands and cursing and screaming, while people thought I was being attacked by my Bronco....

Well if anyone has tried this install.... pls let me know if its worth it... or if I should simple deal with the oil spill mess everytime.

Move oil filter location?

A friend of mine did this on his 91 Bronco and his 69 F100 and loves it. He said it gives him an extra quart of oil as well. He mounted his where the filter can be unscrewed and lowered so oil doesn't drip everwhere. I am thinking about doing it on my 89 but have never made the time as of yet.

Hope this helps,

Move oil filter location?

I have been thinking about this as well for years. The biggest part would be to find a sturdy location for the new filter. dont want it bouncing around on ya when your driven. My concern was always about how well it fit where the original oil filter was. If someone has one im sure they will chim in .

later

I have often thought of trying this but I can't think of the best place where the new filter should be installed at. Frame? Place where the jack goes? Bolted to the fender well? Any ideas?

Move oil filter location?

I had to move mine when I installed the 460, not enough room

I have it mounted up high, next to the radiator on the drivers side. Np more laying on a creeper to change the filter, no more oil running down into my arm pit.

Now why didn't I think of that?
How about a double filter setup? Or do you think that would work and is there anyone who makes a setup for this?
Or should I just go to bed? I worked a night shift this week and go back in 8 hrs. ZZZZZZZ

You might as well throw in an oil cooler while you are at it. They are great.

Move oil filter location?

I was looking though some oil filters.... which reminds me of a question.... back when i changed my first oil filter, i went to kragens to get a new one... there were a couple of choices. So I went with a typical Fram, and there was an option for 5.8L w/o oil cooler and w/ oil cooler.....

So my question is how do you know if your bronco has an oil cooler or not?

I've looked all over but can't seem to find one - besides initially I bought the one for w/o the oil cooler and there was no was that that was going in... so i ended up installing the one w/o the oil cooler.

So if someone out there can tell me how to tell if mine has an oil cooler or not, would appreciate it.

yo,
George Davila (are you still here G?) placed it where Alan wrote; here is an old post by George:
"... I fabricated brackets off the radiator frame and fender to mount a remote oil filter snd trans/engine oil coolers..."
...
And, on later models, I've seen some remove the coolant recovery/windshield fluid combo tank; then they swapped in a narrower coolant rec. tank in same location, but mounted a bag-type windshield fluid tank in the jack area. The remote filter then went onto the w/s fluid location.

Dunno about an oil cooler for your year. I think a tranny cooler would be more desireable if you have an auto.

You have an oil cooler if there are two lines running from the filter boss to the radiator. My 96 has it with the heavy duty tow package. I'll try and get a pic posted.

ah.... so basically if I don't have those lines, I've been always putting in the wrong oil filter huh.....

Well the other one fits better... I think the only difference is the size... I figure the one for the cars "w/o oil cooler" was larger (and quite impossible to fit into my truck - cause it was banging into the surroundings), but until now I haven't experienced any problems...

should I battle with the correct one in putting it in?

I just added some pics of the oil cooler to the '96 Bronco photo album in my sig link. They're near the bottom.

Steve83,

You wouldn't have a tech drawing of the factory engine oil cooler installation for an '85 f150 would ya?. I've come up empty handed in my research so far. I came across what appears to be a factory oil cooler for an '85 Ford truck/van, cooler, hoses brackets and all. Thus far I am unable to find any information about it in my shop manual or on the Web. My truck has a I6 and I would like to add an oil cooler to keep the motor happy while towing the boat.
