I have a 1977 F-250 Hiboy. Today, when it was idling (with choke fully off), or in nuetral, it would barely idle. It wouldn't quite die but just putter about 300 or 400 rpms when it usually idles just under 1000 when it's all warmed up. Powerwise, once moving seemed about normal but maybe not as responsive, like when i push the accelerator but wasn't anything major, just when I'd stop it would just start puttering, truck shaking. What could be the prob here? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Test your ignition module. If it is bad, buy a Motorcraft unit, or get one out of a scrapyard and test it. Mount the module 1/4" off the inner fender with spacers so air can get under it.
How long ago was your last tune up? Did you happen to run your tank almost dry? Might have got some dirt up in there. Kinda crazy but how about the air filter?
My gas is fine; as far as the air filter, I know it is rather dirty and needs desparately to be cleaned but even with the air filter cover off it was the same so I'm pretty sure that that's not what this is from....tune up? well I do pretty much everything myself and everythings up to date.
I checked all my spark plug wires and anything I could think of as far as a hose or something being loose but didn't find anything.
The only reason I mentioned the air filter is because I had this happen on my 75 F-800 dump. I neglected to change the air filter and it would allow the carb to fowl the plugs. Giving me the same problem as you are having. Lil carb cleaner and a new filter did wonders..
Alyssa, have you changed the fuel filter recently? If you still have the type that screws into the carb inlet, they tend to fill up with rust and sediment rather quickly.
Well I found out what it was. Turns out one of my valve springs was broken. Just sittin there cracked and could have fallen into the engine at any time =0 so replaced that, cleaned my air filter, replaced fuel filter and she's purrin like a kitten! thanks everyone!
Alyssa
oh, how do I change my profile and add a pic of my truck??
