experiments with thermometers

The air inside my engine bay, where the open element filter goes, is nearly 90º F hotter than the air outside whereas the air inside my stock housing is 13º F hotter. (temperatures recorded immediately after driving for 1 hour.)

how can I cool down the insides of my engine bay, so putting a better intake filter will be beneficial?

13 degrees higher than the 90 or the ambient air?

The stock set up is 13º hotter than the outside air.

Can you measure the temps while you are moving? Not so large a difference then.

The only way I can think of to lower temps while sitting still would be to install vents in the hood or fenders.

Other than that, the Zoodad hole in the radiator support is a good way to get unobstructed air into the stock airbox. A Zoodad hole with some dryer tubing as ducting does well for the Tymar types.

I was looking at a different open element filter set-up the other week. I can't remember the name, but the site that sold this product was mostly about Dodges. Anyway, the filter was different than the Tymar in that its cross-section is shaped like a doughnut, rather than just a cylinder. Imagine taking the donaldson filter that fits on the tymar and boring a hole down the center of it, and lining the hole with filter element. Make sense? Are you with me? Right, so they sold this setup with a big piece of flexible tubing that connects to the hole. The idea being that you locate the free end of this hose somewhere outside the engine bay so that it (the filter) can breath in some cooler outside air. Alot like the zoodad hole with dryer tubing, but one step further in that its plumbed into the filter.

That's an S&B filter, that's what I just replaced my NAPA filter with , I stopped short of ordering the rest of the system because frankly, I don't think it will supply the volume I need through that little 3" tube.

That sounds interesting - the only question being, where to place the open end. I would not want it low down, to easy to breathe in water, so I need to think, or have suggestions.

I've got a friend that is experimenting with a "heat-barrier" to isolate the TYMAR from heated, underhood air. He has installed dual temp probes, one inside the filter area, the other outside the heat barrier, but under the hood, to determine how much cooler the air is inside the filter area. At idle, the temp inside the filter area is 30-40* cooler, but once the truck is moving, the difference is less than 10*. Once he comes to a stop, the difference in temps climbs very noticeably.
Since you're forced to check after the truck has come to a stop, you aren't able to duplicate the actual temps seen while moving.
Just my $.02.

I really wonder if it matters at all. Look how many magnitudes that air gets heated to say it is 90 degrees in you engine compartment you can easily hit 900 degrees pre turbo - magnitude of 10. Lets say you could cut that intake temp in half, 45 degrees.....thats only 1/2 of a 1 magnitude, doesn't seem significant. And even if you cut it in half what is the affect on EGT's, etc.

There has to be another test other than straight temps to determine if the difference is significant....does it significantly lower EGT's or significantly raise HP.

I'm not being negative about anyone's testing...I have thought about isolating the filter too, but this is something that keeps rolling around in my brain. Ok so we lower engine compartment temps/intake temps by X....does it matter or are we just splitting hairs....

I've often wondered the same thing. I think to find the answer you would have to measure the temp difference at the compressor outlet, and again at the intercooler outlet (if equipt) to see if any significant temp reduction takes place. Even then, I doubt 10* will make more than a couple HP.

I'd be more interested in seeing what effect, if any, a cold air setup on an open element would have on EGT's.
