The 2wd transmission will not mate up to your transfer case.

Your forward clutch has either burnt the clutches or the lip seal is out. C6 is an easy rebuild and not to expensive.

Otherwise you can use the 2wd trans but you have to dismantle both transmissions to get it done. You have to swap out the tailshaft and the output shaft. Easier method might be to remove the pump, take the entire gear train/clutch pack out of the 2wd trans and install it into the 4wd case and reasemble. 77 and 78 should be totally interchangable.

You have to have the transmission out to swap the parts.

You have to take the trans completely apart to get the tail shaft out so you might as well just rebuild the one in the truck. One thing to look at if you are going to use the car's trans is, does it have the 2 bolt holes to mount the neu/rev switch that your truck needs ? Not knowing for sure if your car trans would have the switch on the case, some cases don't have them. You would also need to switch the shift lever.

This is part of why I suggested pulling the gear train/clutch pack unit out of the 2wd case and install it in the 4wd case.

removed the return line front the transmission (it's the one that goes to the rear of the trans) put a hose over that line into a jug. I prefer clear hose for this. fill the trans with fluid and start the truck leaving in park. The trans will pump the fluid through the cooler flushing it out. When it pumps about few quarts stop the truck refil the trains and restart. twice should probably do it, but watch the fluid that comes out and see if it looks and feels clean between your fingers. If needed hit it again.

Some guys will put a inline filter on the return line too. BUT be careful as if it plugs up it will then over heat.

Did you flush the 4x4's tail shaft out that you switched over ? That shaft holds a lot more fluid than one would think and if it wasn't flushed out all the crap in it is going right back in the trans.
