I posted here a while back about my steering going out in my 1997 F150. Since fixing the problem under the hood and restoring the steering, I have yet to fix the electrical problems in the steering wheel itself. When my steering went out, I spun the wheel many times in both directions...in desperation at 65 MPH. Seems I snapped off whatever wires or harness that were inside. Now, the body-bag light comes on and I have no horn or cruise. The blinkers work however as they are further down the column.
Question: Can I safely take the steering wheel off w\o the bag blowing my head off? If not I'll take it in somewhere. But in the case of the steering going out, Ford wanted $700.00 to fix a problem that took one bolt to remedy. Thus I fixed it myself. I need to get this fixed pronto, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would say don't even mess with air bags. they can be pretty nasty if you don't know what you're doing. my advice is to take it to someone who knows how to fix it.
Simple cure: change your clock spring. Requires pulling airbag, steering wheel, and clock spring is right behind it. The only thing to worry about is to disconnect the battery, and let it sit about 20 minutes before you pull the airbag out, because the airbag system generally has a reserve power source, which drains after approximately 20 min. The clock spring is what allows the steering wheel to turn while keeping the electronic features connected.
