Hello diesel friends.
I have all the signs of bad injectors, and now its all up to a diagnose which injectors are bad. First off, how do i do that without a programmer? IS there a way to find which ones are bad? a free scanning method? Second of all, I have seen so many types of injectors and I dont know which ones to pick. I dont run my truck hard so I was thinking to just get as close to OEM as possible. Lastly, keeping the injectors maintained, is it as simple as keeping my oil changed every 3,000 miles and an additive? Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to FTE.
If you can swing it you should get a Scangauge II or an Edge Insight. Both are electronic gauge readers that are pretty much plug and play.
They also read some codes too. They will read the FICM volts and let you know if that is an issue, and not the injectors. That alone could save you a lot of cash.
I personally could not imagine owning this truck without one of them if you have a plan to save money and do repairs yourself.
69cj- I haven't tested anything yet. I just know that i cant ever just hop in and take off in my truck. Its dangerous, because i cant get any speed. I have to let the truck warm up even on warmer days. Then she drives like normal.
piolet- Thanks for that great information! where did you get yours?
flyinstroke- Your kidding Ford is the best way to go!? Never thought id see the day!
Thanks for the great help!
I went for the Edge Insight CTS .... but I like gadgets and it has a whiz bang touch screen with the ability to plug in a $20 camera and get reverse monitor capability.
What you have to understand is that all the stuff on this truck is interconnected and it can still start and run up to a point where something fails. The path to that failure many times will not be shown by the factory gauges and the path usually ends at the most expensive part in the food chain.
One example -- your batteries may be underperforming during start up. Nothing on the dash will tell you this. The truck will still start and run, may be some trouble but not enough to raise concern. Those underperforming batteries will be placing a strain on the FICM, which is trying to kick out 48 volts from batteries that may be providing 9v on crank. The FICM becomes damaged which can be a $900 repair at the dealership or $300 from one of the sponsors on here.
That FICM can also then take out your injectors and that's where the big bucks come in. All that could have been prevented by noticing on your Edge that the batteries were dipping into the 9's on start up and allowing you the chance to replace just the batteries.
Will the scangauge II tell me about injectors? ficm? and so on...
The Scangauge II from my understanding will only let you know about the general powertrain with regard to codes. If you want more indepth, you are going to want something that can read all 9 modules.
I actually prefer the DashDAQ with the Ford License, but that isn't the budget friendly gadget.
Use the search function at the top of the page. Search for "scangauge" in the "titles only" and choose the "6.0 diesel forum".
Trawl through what ever comes back. Pay attention to posts by members 'BLADE35' or 'amdriven2liv'. They are both power users of the scangauge and have posted tons of info on the gauge and what to look for, how to set it up etc.
