Main bearings may not be the problem I think it is the rod bearings .
If you are not running a motorcraft oil filter the 300 will knock like crazy .
Get the Fl-a1 filter at a part store and your engine will not knock!
My 300 had 149000 miles on it when I bought the truck . It didn't have the motorcraft filter on it and it too knocked at start up . I switched it out and no more problems .
I agree with the oil filter issue. Get one with a good anti drainback valve. (Wix, Motorcraft,) . Also watch for parking on excessive angles. My truck clatters more if I park on side slope of driveway !! Go figure.
I am currently using a Ford Motorcraft FL1A filter...does not seem to make any difference.
I believe the bearings are fine, as the oil pressure is good, and I keep the oil clean. I am using 10w30 Valvoline and may switch to 10w40 next time, just to see if it makes any difference.
Also, I am going to try a WIX filter next time...this has been recommended before...thanks
The filter is astart to the problem, The ford 300 does not have a check valve in the filter system to stop the oil from draining back into the base pan after the engine is shut off. The oil drains out of the filter and the clatter you hear is just verious engine parts such as valve train making the noise on startup. There is an adapter that that screws on before the oil filter, but I'm not sure where you might get it. It was intended for the 302 but does work on the 300.
