2000 Ex 5.4 v8
Had 2 coils go bad last week. Got them replaced. Today I am on the turnpike doing 70 and my oil light comes on and oil pressure drops all the way.
No engine noises and temp is OK so I coast to the next exit. Get off and go to the gas station in the corner. Turn the truck off...
Wait a few minutes, when I go turn it back on it wont start. Th motor wont even turn. It just clicks.
I notice smoke coming from the wire that goes from the starter relay to the starter so my brother comes and gets me and we go to the nearest auto part store and buy a new relay.
Replace it and try to start it, same thing. Just clicks and smoke.
My brother gets under the truck and taps the starter as I try to start it, no go.
I am fearing the engine locked up. But no engine noises, clicks or clacks or anything.
so yes, forgot to mention that, Checked oil as soon as I got off the highway and the dipstick had a tiny bit at the end only. Let it cool and remeasure and still just a tiny bit at the end. Bought some oil at the gas station and put in 4 qts. Checked dipstick and now oil was at max. Got home and when it FINALLY started I turned it off and let it sit for a bit. checked the oil and now it is WAY past max. Will need to drain some tomorrow.
Sorry but I think you are beyond oil changes at this point. The fact that it was at max on the stick after 4 quarts installed tells me that it was 3 quarts low. Those dipsticks can be tricky, wipe it clean, put it in 3/4 of the way then quickly bottom it out and pull out quickly. Pistons can seize when they get no oil and lock the engine until they cool down. If you EVER see the oil light come on and the gauge drop to zero shut it down right away and hitchhike to get some oil if you have to. The reason your starter cable smoked was because the engine was temporarily locked up and the starter was trying to turn over a locked motor. I'm guessing at least one seized piston, drain some oil out so it fills about an inch in a pan, then look at it in the sunlight for aluminum flakes (like you are gold mining). Good luck and get back to us.
