Putting a posi into a 9" requires total dis-assembly, not as easy as the others, they have lunch-box lockers, don't require carrier removal. Yep, power with a posi makes the van squirrely to say the least, but most if not all hotrods spin both wheels.
I wanna keep the three on the tree I like standards but someone once told me some had 4spds in them.
You want an Econoline with a 4 speed? Look for a 1963 or 1964, as FoMoCo offered the Dagenham 4 speed as an option.
But, don't expect to find the shift lever on the floor, because it's located on the steering column. 4 on the tree!
The only engines available for 1969/74 Econolines: 170 (1969/70), 240 & 300 I-6's, 302 2V / Only transmissions: Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh, C4 Cruise-O-Matic.
maples01: There's no such thing as a 1968 Econoline. While the new Econoline was introduced February 1968, FoMoCo referred to them as 1969's.
Other examples: Mustang introduced 4/23/1964, FoMoCo referred to them as 1965's. Continental Mark III introduced March 1968, FoMoCo referred to them as 1969's.
Maverick introduced June 1969, FoMoCo referred to them as 1970's. Ranger introduced March 1982, FoMoCo referred to them as 1983's.
I say 68 to keep from getting corrected by those who swear they had one titled as a 68.
I knew I heard about 4 on the tree, why did they stop making it?
Some states back then titled vehicles in the year they were first sold, not by their actual model year.
Dagenham not available in Econolines after 1964, probably because the demand was slight. The convoluted 4 on the tree shift linkage could have been another factor.
Dagenham also available in I-6 1962/64 Falcons, 1965/66 Mustangs...all have a floor shift. The Dagenham's reverse gear has a distinct whine.
This trans was originally installed in English Fords. City of Dagenham located just east of London, where FoMoCo's assembly plant is.
Ok I'm intrigue about this four on tree has anyone tried putting one of those into a 1974 if so how difficult was it?
First you'd have to find the trans, next the 170 I-6 it bolted to (if your 1969/70 doesn't have it), then fab up a driveshaft, all new shift linkage cuz the steering column, wheelbase and the integral body are different.
Next, you'd wonder where in the world replacement parts could be found. Obsolete as the dodo bird, prolly hard to find at the trans' original source, Dagenham England.
Other 4-on-the-trees: Mercedes-Benz 219 & 220 with or without Hydrac / Citroen ID19, DS21, DS21 Pallas.
I don't think it could be bolted to any V8. For example, 1963 1/2 260 Falcon Sprints were available with the T-10 4 speed Warner trans, while 1963 Falcon 170's were available with the Dagenham 4 speed.
If the Dagenham could be bolted to the 260's bellhousing, why didn't FoMoCo use it?
You want 4 on the tree at an affordable price, look for a 1955/76 Citroen ID19, DS21. Citroens are the only cars in the world you can remove a rear wheel from, then drive them all over the world!
Have FWD, air/oil hydro/pneumatic suspension, torsion bars and were the first cars in the world to have radial tires.
I was on a Econoline website years ago for the first generations and a guy told me he put a 302 into one of them I wanna say a 64 or 65 not sure how he did it or what transmission he used I figured three on the tree since I didn't know about the fours but I remember him saying it was standard trans
I've seen several 1961/67 Econolines that had swapped 289/302's, but I've never seen or heard of a Dagenham 4 speed behind any V8. Maybe FoMoCo did this across the pond or down under with a limey V8, but not here.
I never knew about the 4 speed on the tree in a Ford Bill. I learned something today. Thanks Bud. Been a Ford man my whole life too. I love the column shift 3 speed. Had a Mercedes 4 on the tree and loved it. Now ya got me thinking Bud. So it only came behind the 170 in the Van? Stangs had the same trans that shifted on the floor. Prolly seen them but didn't know it from other 4 speeds. Now I am gonna have to Google this and learn all about it. But first I gotta go down to the beach with the girls and kids as they are swimming and enjoying the oh so rare sun here in the rain forest.
