As I stated above, the main issue is getting the spacing correct since the 2nd gen 7.3 did not use a bellhousing adapter on the back of it, so the ZF6 bellhousing is deeper. You guys are misunderstanding what he means by the patterns being different. He is referring to the pattern on the block itself. On the IDI the bottom 4 bolts just have the spacer, they thread into the block, the top 2 bolt to the block, and then the Bellhousing bolts to the spacer, those are what need adapter, and its NOT a big deal to do so.

This swap is not complicated at all, and it doesn't take a special machine shop to do it, it could be done with almost using just hand tools.....

I also got told I couldn't put a 13" clutch behind my IDI..... but what do I know.
Another reason im considering... bigger clutch, "better" gear spacing, tougher transmission... but gawd i hate drivin them 6spds... Justin you may have won me over to the slush box, cant stop thinking about it and now im undecided.

I hate shifting my ZF5, and a ZF6 is just as bad. They're slow, you have to drop $1,000 on a clutch to hold the power. Once you reach 400hp range, and you're racing it, the synchro's start dying fast and its a downward spiral.

Spend the dough on a built E4OD and stand-alone controller.

Once I start the new job after I get out of the army in a few months, that is one of the first things happening to my truck. ATS E4OD, and an optishift or the like.

That explains it well. Thanks for clearing that up, and for the visual aids. What vehicles did those transmissions in the pictures come out of? Or, maybe I should ask how many different cases did they use for different applications? I ask because I didn't know for sure if one would have to have the ZF-6 from a 7.3L or if you could also use one from a 6.0L, for example. The cases used in the Duramax applications or Ford V10's have to be different, don't they?

From what i know, a 6.0 trans will not work, you need one from a 99-03 7.3L

The issue with the ZF-6 is the bell housing depth. So, the spacer on the back of the engine needs to be removed. Has anyone considered putting a spacer behind the flywheel instead of removing the spacer on the engine or would that cause other problems. Never tried anything like that myself. I don't know how that would turn out. Just thinking out loud.

Putting a spacer behind the flywheel would cause your starter to not reach, hence why you need to remove the 1" spacer and bolt the starter to the ZF6
