Anyone ever replace the colume shifter with the OD switch? I had just bought this truck and the shop that used to work on it said that the OD switch was bad and the whole shifter needed to be replaced and that it was an exspansive part and a time consumeing job. Do you think I could just put a toggle switch on the dash to control the OD? At this time the truck does not go in to OD. Jack
It would be a LOT easier to answer your question if you mentioned what year/model/trim level your truck is. I'm guessing it's a '92-96, and replacing that shifter is EASY & cheap. Look at the GP Auto pics photo album in my signature link and you'll find a couple of pics of a stripped-down steering column. Look here and you'll find instructions on pulling the lock cylinder (and almost anything else), which is necessary to get to the shifter. Check the classified ads here, and you'll find someone with good used shifters...
It seems a common thing to happen with these OD switches is that the Shifter actually cuts the wires to the switch like mine did. A little solder and heat shrink and I was on my way. Also if it is the switch it takes all of 3 minutes to replace. Best of luck....
