These are both also Fraternal organizations, I don't know much about the Moose but I was a member of the Elks for several years, several years ago. A lot of people join the Moose and the Elks, the Eagles too, I suppose, just to have a place to socialize with others of their same social strata or whatever. For what it's worth, I know that in the town where I lived the Elks were all "white collar" workers and it seemed to me the Moose were mostly "blue collar". They all have some charitable raison d'etre, in some states the Elks have a crippled children's hospital, in other states they pay for treatment at established hospitals. By the way, a contributor said his mother was "Desert Star"- I know there is an "Eastern Star", and there may be a "Desert Star" but I never heard of it.
oh.., and, yes, that is the Shriners. And both Moose and Elks are called "Lodge", and they may or may not have a "Club" (read "Bar") at their facility. The official name for the Elks is "The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks" (BPOE) and it was originally an organization of actors. The Moose, I believe, is called "The Loyal Order of Moose"
My Grandmother was an Eastern Star and my Grandfather a Shriner........I saw an interesting thing on the History channel about it. It also included those conspiracies about New World Order and the Skull and Bones society etc. (been trying to read more on this)
I too saw that program on the history channel, it had to do with secret organizations. Please note, everyone, that the Skull and Bones Society has no connection to any of the Fraternal orders heretofore discussed. It is some sort of society on one of those Eastern Ivy League University campuses, I dont' know which, offhand. (Nor do I care.)
