Stupid M5OD

Help please; I have a '91 F-150 with a M5OD tranny (piece of ). Any way, I am having trouble shifting, into any gear! Grinding when I am stopped at a light, and when I first start it up! I am thinking that it is the syncros in the tranny or something wrong with the clutch, as in not disengaging/engaging. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bru

When my clutch went out, it started getting difficult to shift into 1st at a stop, but the other gears were ok. By the time I got home I couldn't shift into first at all, could barely shift into 2nd (had to use 2nd after 1st went out), and I was able to get home. The clutch felt funny when taking off, and it was obvious that the clutch was gone.

Just a thought, maybe check the fluid level in your cluth resevoir. I was having troubles shifting in mine, only to find out my resevoir was low. Just a thought.

Thanks for the tips, the resivor is full. Right now I'am looking arround to find the best prices for a new clutch and all of the clutch parts, as well as a rebuild kit for my tranny. If anyone has any more info please let me know, this is my only ride!

Thanks,

Really sounds like the clutch is going south.I really doubt you are having internal trans trouble.you would more likely be jumpipng out of gear before total loss of syncros. I wish I had a stupid M5OD rather than an AOD.

If your clutch is not disengaging/engaging it has very little if nothing to do with the tranny or the clutch unless something besides the clutch disk is wearing out. All the clutch does is transfer power. About the only thing that could be wrong if its not going into and out of gear properly is the slave/master cylindar. MUCH cheaper than a new clutch or tranny. But from what your describing about it grinding I would suspect the slave cylindar either 1. isn't bleed properly 2.was once low on brake fluid and has a bunch of air in the lines 3.its telling you its time to get a new one before you can't shift at all

A new slave will cost $120 from ford if you do all the labor. But I bet a person could find one cheaper. Keep in mind, the M5OD uses internal slave cylindars NOT external like most of the ZF's. Internals not only cost roughly twice as much but are about 10 times more work to change. It requires the removal of the trans to access. However, before you go spending a bunch of money on new parts of any sort try bleeding the slave cylindar first. You may have to bleed it many times to get any trapped air out. Good luck.

Yeah, but unless you've replaced your clutch within the last 75 or so thousand miles, it's not a bad idea to replace the clutch away. The main cost in these repairs is labor, so why take the tranny apart twice. My truck had a new clutch, slave cylinder, the flywheel was resurfaced, and probably some other stuff. I was younger and I didn't know a thing about trucks then. If there is a lot of time on the clutch, replace that at the same time if you can. My luck would be that i'd replace the slave cylinder, and 2 months later my clutch goes.

If you are doing the clutch, probably should replace the slave cylinder at the same time since it also requires a tranny drop. I would doubt the tranny is bad. When my clutch was bad there was no slippage and I thought it was the tranny too. But turned out the clutch disk was warped and would drag just enough to keep the shaft turning and make it hard to go into gear. I regret not getting a new slave cylinder put in as the one I have is junk and tends to bind making it sometimes bang into engagement.

Here's a simple check to see if the clutch is causing the hard shifting problem; with the truck idling and not moving shift through the gears (clutch disengaged!) Then shut the truck off, but be sure to leave the clutch disengaged. Try shifting through the gears again. If you can shift easily with the engine off, the problem is probably clutch and not trans.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Oct-02 AT 05:48 PM (EST)]Thanks a lot guys, you have been a great help!!!!!!!!
The clutch has 123K miles on it. I am planning to rebuild the truck as time goes on, so I think that I am going to replace the clutch and clutch cylinders, as well as rebuild the tranny. Probably sometime next year I am going to put a new exhaust on, and rebuild the engine!

Thanks again for all you help!!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Oct-02 AT 06:24 PM (EST)]with 123K miles I would defn. take a look at your z-bar bushing (near clutch pedal assemby, hooks to slave cyninder?), i replaced mine today, hulluva better pedal feel and seems i can depress the clutch further.
