Wiper work on HI

I have had 3 trucks (88, 89, 91) and all have had wiper issues. Eventually the wipers quit except on HI. Is this typical or is something else wrong?? Is there a quick way to check the wiper motor or just swap it out??

Not the wiper motor.
You need a new intermittent wiper governor, or resolder the heatsink inside.

Resolder the heat sink to what??
Does the governor unit "come" apart, or do you have to "break" it apart??

This unit plugs in between the switch and the harness.
It's screwed to the top of the emergency brake bracket.
Releasing the emergency brake sends a shock through it that breaks the solder joints and then it fails (except in high)

Find the box and fix or replace it.

Talking Me too Me too !!!

Jim, Thanks for clearing up one of my truck's gremlins !!! Now all I have to do is find a way to get my BIG self up in there to extract that little jewel.
Now I understand why, when I wanted low speed on my wipers I had to depress and release the e-brake. I guess I can safely cancel the planed ghost-buster appointment Dave

Do yourself a favor and DON'T reattach it to the bracket.
Just wrap it in foam rubber and zip tie it up behind the fuse panel.

There is a VERY good reason that it says in big letters "DO NOT DROP"
Mine has not failed since I took it off the bracket.
(I had fixed it twice and replaced it once before this)

Great info!!
The dash in my '89 is already apart - trying to find out why I don't have dash lights.
Surprisingly we have had a wet spring in the high desert of WY. Memorial Day Saturday we had 5" of heavy wet snow. It is sunny and 60* now but it seems to drizzle a little every afternoon. Having only HI on the wipers is a pain.
About the time I get it fixed - it won't rain for 3-4 months

Pretty much the same across the boards until they went to the stalk mounted wiper switch.

Jim, I have tried to get up in that area to pull the wiper control and replace the 4 way emergency flasher on the other side of the fuse panel . I will shy away from pulling the for fear it will cause more problems than it would cure it's called grief avoidance ... I HATE ELECTRICAL ISSUES !!! Dave

Try removing the one screw holding it to the E-brake bracket.
Some little 5/16th or 7mm self tapper....
Then you can get it down where you can see and work on it.

I got mine down and opened up, but I don't see what needs to be soldered??
I see the "U" shaped heat sink, a large and small capacitor and another large object that has some foam glued to the top. Everything looks intact - where do I solder?
