I have a 97 F 150, 4.6 L, 4X4, S/C and when I start up the engine I am consistantly seeing either a white/gray or black smoke coming out the exhaust pipes. Could this be caused by bad gasoline or some other problems? Or is the Cat forward to the engine dirty or clogged?? Or is it something internal in the engine? I have already cleaned the air intake system (TB, MAF, AIC, EGR etc and replaced the plugs. (On that note I think my EGR needs to be replaced. It pings more since I removed the carbon build up in the TB at WOT and downshifts in the transmission.) Any help is greatly appriciated.
How many miles on your engine? Maybe worn valve guides?
Do you notice your oil level has dropped any when you get ready to do an oil change?
I suggest you post in the 4.6 / 5.4 forum. This doesn't sound like an exhaust problem.
