Speedo drive gear?
63 F100, 223, 3 speed. I put on a new speedo cable, the speedo driven gear looks fine, my speedo will run up to 30 if I put my reversable drill on it, but no speed on the road. Tried another speedo, believed to be good, no speedo. The Shop Manual only addresses the driven gear and its little ball in assembly of an entire transmission. Can I just unbolt the tailpiece (63 is first year for synchro 1st, and different from previous 3 speeds in some ways), pull it off (after the u joint is removed) and fix this, or is that gonna be opening Pandora's Box (or a can of worms, if you're a fisherman)? The driveshaft can be lifted and wiggled quite a bit at the output yolk. Is this normal, or do I have trouble-a-brewin'. Trans runs/shifts quiet and smooth. Speedo drive gear?
It has been my experience that the drive gear is steel and is on the output shaft of the tranny. I guess the roll pin could have broken causing it to slip. I would go to the Ford dealer and buy a new cable gear first. They are color coded. You need to double check the number of teeth and which direction that they are angled to compare it with a new one. I had one that looked good but was worn down enough to slip at higher speeds.
