I am looking for a few low cost things I can do to get some more performance and maybe better mileage. The truck has a 360 in it with a 3spd auto. Any help appreciated, thanks.
Gas mileage and "performance" typically have an inverse relationship. It's usually hard to have the best of both worlds with a "low-buck" approach so something has to give....
How about telling us your vision for the rig and list your priorities as high, medium, or low.
A few easy things. Make sure the tune-up is good. On mine ('78 F250 with 400m and C6), much needed replacement of the OE carb with a reman, plugs, wires, cap, rotor and careful inspection of vacuum lines with replacement as needed made a big difference in the way it drove. It felt stronger and smoother.
Tall and fairly narrow non-lugged tires help mileage. Run plenty of air pressure. Too tall can reduce performance as gearing is effectivly higher.
Next steps in my case get a bit more involved. 400m's respond to a mild cam and "straight up" timing set. I don't know about the 360. Beyond that, EFI and rebuild for higher compression.
