Well a friend of mine just got a new Mercedes ML diesel about 2 months ago. I got a call about 3 weeks ago that his wife filled it with unleaded and started to drive out of the gas station when she remembered. Luckily she was smart enough to shut it down and call him. Dealer gauged his insurance for 13k to replace all lines, injectors, etc... I told him really all that needed to be done was a tank flush because she didn't drive it any distance luckily. Well last week not even 1 week after they got their ML back I got a call that she did it again and this time realized it as she was filling the tank. I got him in touch with a good friend and honest mechanic who pulled the tank, flushed and replace for $800. Thus why I don't lend my truck out and my wife never fills it.... Thought you would all get a little laugh from this and know that if this has happened to you at least your not alone...
They would be better off in NJ where your not allowed to pump your own gas. Most gas jockeys wouldn't make that mistake with the sign in the fuel door that says DIESEL.
I've always worried that my wife would do that, but I don't worry as much now that we only have diesel vehicles. Not every station around here has diesel so you have to consciously look for it as opposed to just stopping at the closest station.
And yes, I would have lost it the second time too. How you could forget something like that twice????

lol quite a few years ago, my buddies wife had a jockey fill their diesel jetta with gas one day, gas station paid to have everything fixed and everything. Ended up with free gas for a while too, an attempt from the station to make up for his car being in the shop for the day.
That's downright amazing that someone could make that mistake twice. On a serious note, some people have no appreciation for money and therefore a ridiculously high repair bill would be meaningless to them. I can see someone like this making that mistake again.
Even if it were an insurance company paid repair, I would be seriously sore about it for quite awhile after. Fortunately for me my wife doesn't misfuel them, she just smashes them up.

I will never trust the jersey pump jockeys, most of then can't say or understand the word diesel.
So is there a pump union in NJ or something?
Can you pump your own fuel or will bad things happen to you?
Pump attendants went the way of $0.79 gasoline down here.
Oregon used to have the same law, a few years ago, I was up to Portland for business and had a rental car. Pulled into the gas station and needed to fill up fast to make my flight, Started pumping and some dude comes running over screaming that I can't do that.
I'm like, Why Not? I fill my own tanks all the time. And don't have time to wait for you. Thats when I learned that I was supposed to stay in my car and wait for them.
I had a similar experience in 2007 in PA only not fuel related.
Needed to run a few CAT5e network cables but had to drill holes.
I know how to use a drill but it was explained clearly to me that I was not allowed to do such a thing.
Long story short, had to wait two days for some guy to drill a dang hole.
I've yet to figure out how that's productive.

Yes a guy named Tony or Paulie will take a bat to your shins if you pump your own gas!
I'm visiting family this weekend in NJ. Used a truck stop for diesel fill and pumped my own. I couldn't access the DEF pump. For some reason the pump wouldn't populate the option. Think it has something to do with tractor number and payment method. Never filled up on the tractor side of a station before.
