Well, I lost first round. I cut a .010 light but broke out. Ran a 10.889 on a 10.90 dial in. The other guy had an almost perfect light, .001. He ran 10.98 on his 10.96 dial. I backed out 4mph but still broke out. Damn good race, can't complain about losing one like that. I ran dad's car today. Mine's got the motor in pieces right now being freshened. I was kinda tickled as I was quicker than that guy and he had a 68 mustang with a lot of fiberglass and a 523 cu in. ford. My 390 I built in dad's car, which is heavier too, is faster. I had fun and it was good to get away for a couple days.

Sounds like a good time! How did the new springs do pulling the race trailer? Could you tell any difference?
It was a big difference. It drove so nice. Absolutely the right thing for me to do. You know how with a big load it can get "spongy" when you hit a bump, not now. It's not rough at all with the trailer, just works like it should. As you can tell, I'm happy about them for sure. I was on a couple fairly rough roads (Glenn can verify south dakota roads have something to be desired in quite a few areas) and it did not beat me up at all.
You're right Mike, all about getting away for a couple days and having a little fun.
Hey, glad you made it OK, its such a bummer being on the side of the road. Sorry to hear about the the race, you'll get him the next time. Actually, I found I90 the worse on the cement part. Terrible. I got a air bag hitch that really, really helps. But, if I had it to do all over again I would get a triple axle camper. I think my triple axle 42' 'white elephant' rides better then my dual axle 35' camper.
Thanks Glenn. Triple axle is the way to go for sure. I special ordered my old bumper pull 30 footer with a third axle.
Started it this morning to back up and unhook and it cranked better than it has for a while. Going to get an alternator, still haven't decided where, but hold up on the starter for a bit. Hopefully the starters just not teezing me with one good crank and then decides to quit next time...
Not much can go wrong with an alternator except the regulator or brushes. Since your intention is to replace the entire alternator you might want to go ahead and pull the internal regulator and inspect it. I find it easier to remove the alternator from the truck and put it on a work bench. On the back side there are a couple screws (bolts) holding a plate on, that's the regulator. Remove them and it will wiggle out along with the brushes, as they are attached to the regulator. With the regulator removed inside you will see the rings the brushes ride on ...
If the rings are excessively worn then the alternator is trashed. At the parts store you can purchase the entire regulator with new brushes or just the brushes. A heck of a lot cheaper if that's the problem. Of course, since it's an electrical item if it does not fix the issue there is usually no return on the part.
I think I'll still get a new one, but thanks Jim. Depending on how I go if I can keep the old one without eating a core, I'll definitely still check it out and see if it can be fixed. Spare parts are always good. I guess I could check it out first before I get one. We'll see what time allows and what I go with. Mean green is no core, not sure on the ford one yet, haven't heard back from ed yet.
Any other ideas for an alternator I'm open to as long as its new and made in the usa.
First thing I would do is get the alternator tested, and load test both batteries. I've seen a weak battery pull the voltage down even when the engine is running, on other vehicles. Wasn't so weak that it couldn't start the engine, but nearing the end of its life. You need to load test the batteries isolated from one another (both cables disconnected).
I ordered a new mean green alternator and starter. Kind of hits the wallet a little hard, but now everything is gonna be new and should not have to be looked at for quite a while.
I got the wire end that plugs into the alternator at napa. My wires had gotten chafed and covered up, I suppose from laying on the motor at some time. Surprised they had it.
Got my license plate bracket ordered from partsguyed. I ordered a new vss along with it. Mine is ok, but I had to pay 10 dollars shipping no matter what, and the license plate was only 6. I had to justify the shipping so that seemed like a good sensor to have in my truck as a spare. 28 bucks or something like that for it.
Kinda seems like it Mike. I actually haven't spent much more than needed though. Leaf springs had to get done, needed batteries and cables, now needed a starter and alternator. I just happened to do it all within a couple months.
Taking an easy day today, but now that I got my second, third, and fourth jobs I can afford to fix the necessary things a little easier and not buy the cheapest crapass starter and batteries like I did last time.. It still does hurt the wallet plenty..
