Hey everybody, I just joined here to ask a question or 2 about a problem i'm having on my 7.3. last weekend a friend of mine and i installed a set of glowshift gauges on my 01' and since then something hasn't been right. We had to drill the hole for the EGT probe so we did and when we did this we noticed the smallst tip of the bit was missing. We looked and looked for this piece of bit and noting resurfaced. We thought it may of boken up while drilling. What scares me is when i left his place i was driving home and the turbo didnt sound right. Also noticed a slight loss in power and intake suction but nothing too serious at that point. I never heard anything go through the turbo like a crack or shatter or any kind of grinding or anything like that. I had a professional look at it that works on these trucks regular come over and we took off the intake and compressor wheel housing. blades spin free no sign of hanging up or ketching. We installed a GTP83 wicked wheel from BD and a BD wastegate actuator. Could not see into the exhaust side because of the the 5'' downpipe and we didnt have a small enough mirror. The truck now seems alot more slower then before even after i added the wheel and actuator. When driving the turbo sounds very choppy and makes a strange whine when spooling and just coasting down a hill. (the trucks a 6 speed manual). I have an appointment scheduled at the place where i take it for bigger repairs Wednesday but it's bothering me what might be wrong with it. Any advice or help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Hi, yeah that was my guess too. The boost gauge glo shift gave me was defective. It shows 5lbs psi even when the truck is idling. It does work but idk if its accurate. I had it up to 15 lbs.
EGT probe goes into the exhaust, so you will not have to worry about the drill bit tip getting in the engine if it went through the turbo, it was then spit out the exhaust pipe..
but it does sound like you have impeller damage.

Wow, I can't believe I said what I said about the tip.
my experience with a w.w., is that you do lose performance sum, but benefits are you dont get surge, well i dont anymore, anyways. Re-inspect your w.w. I did something similar last year, installing the wheel, which i ended up NOT having it installed all the way on the shaft. Took little over a month to show its face..(blew turbo up, broke shaft), but realized what had happened.
Make sure the shaft of the turbo is protruding past the w.w about 1/4in, if not, remove and install again. Mine too sounded choppy..etc, with the first w.w. install..btw, have same truck/trans too.
Bad #3 and #8 Injectors. I have no idea how this happened all of a sudden. No turbo damage what so ever (thank god) but I still find it funny that 2 bad injectors could make the turbo sound so odd.
Did you already replace the injectors? Those 2 happen to be the ones #3 and 8 that will show up on a contribution test as out of range with the latest CPS's. Just trying to save you money if you haven't already replaced them.
did you put the egt probe in the header or up pipe? thats where its supposed to go....not in the exhaust downpipe.....and i agree with big al the newer cps sensors will do that....have you pulled the turbo to check her out?
Hey guys, No i didnt replace them yet. They told me this was the only code the truck was throwing. I find that strange cause my check engine light wasnt on. He said it was from everyday diesel fuel with low sulfur. I Use Lucas every tank too btw. The exhaust probe is in the exhaust manifold and the turbo was looked at no internal damage was done.
