Much as I appreciate all of those who serve, and have served, in our nations military...
This is MEMORIAL day, not veterans day.

An occasion to remember those who have given their lives for this nation.

Flame away if you like, but I will be honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while in the service of this Country.
...Everyone else will honored on November 12th.

Great post Jim and reps sent sir. Actually, as I see Memorial day, it's a day of remembrance, period. This is a day to reflect on why we have our freedoms, our way of life and the sacrifices that all Americans have made in that effort.

While your distinction is correct I must say everyday is memorial day when it comes to appreciating those who made the ultimate sacrifice. And while Veteran's Day may come in November there isn't a day on the calendar that it's not appropriate to recognize and thank a veteran and especially someone on active duty.

Since it is Memorial Day this weekend I'd like to point out that there are battlefields all over the Southeast that also bear remembrance. We lost well over half a million citizens in the Civil War, one of the last battles taking place a couple of hours from my home:

Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park

Whether or not you like Bill O'Reilly, please set aside your opinion and read his book "Killing Lincoln." For one, it tells the story that we all already know in the form of a novel, but also sheds light on some of the lesser known battles of the end of the war, the link above being among the very last. Also, if you want another way to honor veterans, O'Reilly's website gives tons of money to the Wounded Warrior project, the sale of the book among them.

The descriptions of the battles that ended the Civil War will bring tears to your eyes.

Please have a safe and fun weekend!

Great post, Jim!

I try to instill upon my kids, that Veteran's Day is set aside as the National day to Honor and Thank those that have served this GREAT Nation.
However, I have also educated my kids to honor these same men and women EVERY day, for these brave men and women are the ones that keep us Free.

Memorial Day is a day to remember, honor and reflect upon those that have paid the Ultimate Price, for our Freedom.

To all of the Active members of the Armed Forces. . . . Thank You for your Service.
I also want to say Thank You, to all of the veterans of our Armed Forces.
You all have my deepest admiration and respect.

To those that have family members that have paid the Ultimate Price, I grieve with you.
And even though my words will never be read by those that have paid the Ultimate Price, Thank You. Your fight for Freedom has not been in vain.
May you forever Rest in Peace.
You will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

My grandfather served in the US Army in Italy from 44' thru VE day, the winter of 1944-45 was brutally cold even in Italy and the snow was smothering.......
Many, many, years later on a deer hunt, my father shot a nice spike buck, it's blood covered the fresh snow, as grand dad came up to help, he froze after seeing the brilliant red blood on the snow, he turned away, walked back to the truck rifle in hand, never hunted again.
Years later, shortly before his passing, he told how a German sniper killed his best friend and how the blood on the snow brought him back to a horrible ambush on a mountainside in Italy so long ago.

These are just small samples of what the fallen and those who were lucky enough to survive experienced..........Think of that as you turn the burgers on the grill tomorrow.

Happy Memorial Day Everyone!

I hope that everyone can enjoy this holiday with family and friends.
And that everyone spends at least a moment to honor those who gave their lives for the freedom that we all enjoy.

Good Morning to all.
Today, take a minute and reflect on the sacrifice so many have made for our country.
My flag is at ½ staff and will remain there until noon.
Then it will be returned to the top of its' pole.
That is the proper procedure today.
If your flag is fixed in place you should attach a black ribbon to the staff immediately under the lower edge of the flag.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

God Bless the U.S.A. by Lee Greenwood - YouTube

It never gets old.
