I'm looking to buy a new "used" truck in the near future. I have no real brand loyalty, just want a truck that I can drive to at least 200000 miles in about 10 years (like I'm doing with my '89 Dodge W150). I see a lot of adds around for F150's with the V6 engine. Can anyone tell me something about this motor (pros/cons) My only experience with Ford engines are in my '98 explorer (4.0L SOHC) and my father-in-laws '88 F150 HD (351 V8). Power is not as important to me as reliability and economy (my 89 318 still gets about 15 MPG on the highway, but burns a quart of oil for every 400 miles). The truck I buy will also have a manual transmission. Any help is greatly appreciated.
well, from personal experience, I have the V6 in a 1997 and I have no problems with it at all. Plus if you look at the stats of the V6 motor compared to the small V8, the V6 almost performs as well. it has just 10 less horsepower and 35 less torque. It has been a very good truck to me for last year about, so my opinion on the V6 is that I like it. good luck
glad to hear f150az has good luck with his 97 v6, but if i wanted a ford v6, i would go with either a straight six from a 95/96 model, or move up to a 99 or newer model. The 95 straight six engines are great. and i think the newer v6's (post 98) are good. As f150az points out, plenty of 97/98's are good too but check it close before you buy. you might want to consider a 974.6. It's true the hp and torque arent much better than the V6 but the 4.6 is much better in terms of reliaiblity. there is no appreciable differnce between mpg between a 4.6 or a 4.2. my 97 has 144,000 on it. total repairs of seven bucks (new oil filler cap).
