how much is enough back pressure to keep from losing bottom end? i was considering the idea of long tube headers with the bolt on header mufflers (like purple hornies or turbo mufflers) but i was got to thinking, that cant leave me with very much back pressure? also would i ever have enough room to run long tube headers with a bolt on glasspack/muffler on a 4x4 truck?
Well when you find some power in a stock 302, let me know. But at any rate. No your truck will be alrite with minimal back pressure. you could just run open headers and be sufficient.
I was under the impression that you do need a little bit of back pressure and if not you will lose what little bit of bottom end our trucks have..
....You don't need or want back pressure , just don't go to big on pipe size , scavenging is what you want , hotter gases flow better , 1 1/2 primary tube headers and 2 1/2 in exhaust for dual , 3 in for single is fine.....
Maybe you should reconnect your other 4 plug wires.
Depends on what he's comparing it to, my 302 had a lot of low end torque compared to my 4.6 and my 5.4, but was an anemic dog compared to my 460 and my diesel.
What? I've always heard people say that 302's don't have alot of bottom end?
Anyways does anyone know if I would have the clearance for long tube headers and a muffler bolted straight onto the headers like a cherry bomb or purple hornie?

Most of the time (stock) they don't, but mine only had 23 or 24,XXX on it when I sold it... Had more than my 351, but that's not fair because the 351 was rode hard and put away wet, a lot, before I started playing with it.
If you do do this to your truck get ready to hear the comment "the world hates you" alot. I had dual 3" strait pipes with glasspacks and turn out just before the rear tires on my '73 and It was loud obnoxious and backfired a lot. so if you can live with that I say go for it... but be forewarned...

You probably don't have room for those. Check your fuel tank location.
x2 on the last post. Those kind of "Mufflers" are garbage. First, you DO NOT want weight on headers. They leak enough without a muffler hanging on them, and they will crack and leak even more. Second, you want the exhaust out from under the vehicle.
You like fix-it and noise tickets, or tickets for other stuff that the copper would have let slide but for the racket coming out of your truck?
Put your headers on, put some 1 3/4" pipes to some big steel mufflers, run it out the back or at least out the side ahead of the tire, and save us the joy of your engine. You will also save your own hearing.

Compared to the other available engines it makes the least low end torque. A rear axle gear swap can help this.
