can any one tell me what the big deal on these 3g conversions are? i have used the 60 amp altenators for years with no problems other than wearing the bearings out due to lots of miles but the seemed to work well

If you have no power draws that combine to more than 60a then it's no big deal. Many these days have power requirements that combined put a strain on the system. A 130amp 3g swap, from a JY, that costs less than 50 bucks is appealing and easy to do.

Unless you want to run your stock ammeter. You would have to disconnect it to use a 3G, which is why I'm passing on it. Not trying to argue or hate, just giving more info

Not trying to argue or hate, just giving more info Me either!

If your amp meter works... More power to you! Ours is notorious for not doing much; if anything....

I just did a 3g upgrade, though not needed. I also went with a Amp meter to Volt meter upgrade from: Rocketman's Classic Cougar Innovations

I think my old alternator was 65a and I had a old large 130 or 40(can't remember) lying around but upgraded to 3g anyway. These 3g's are smaller and powerful but there is the meter issue as you pointed out.

That's cool. Wasn't aware anyone did conversions for our trucks. That would solve some of the problems!! I stand corrected LOL.

Then and Now

Back in the day, the electrical demands on vehicles was really low. I mean, figure that the most demands were just the vehicle systems like the heater blower, lights, ignition, and AM/FM/cassette stereos - enough for a 60A alternator.

Nowadays, think about how many new systems need electrical input - engine computer, tranny controller, ABS sensors/solenoids, airbags, electric cooling fan(s), booming AM/FM/CD/IPOD/Satellite sound system, GPS navigation screen, climate controls (left, right, and sometimes rear), HID headlights, fog or driving lights, power windows, power sunroof, power seats, telescoping steering column, power-adjustable pedals, and power side mirrors. Now let's add some 4x4 accessories - offroad lights, a winch, maybe an on-board air compressor.

It wasn't really telling you much anyway. A voltmeter is a much more useful tool and works regardless of what system you run.
