Question Cleaning MAF sensor

The MAF sensor in a 94 explorer (4.0L) looks easy enough to get to and remove, the question that I have is once the thing is on the bench, how do you clean it, and what do you use to clean it? I've read alot of posts here saying that cleaning the MAF sensor fixed this or that problem, but I haven't really seen anyone describe the details of cleaning one. All help is appreciated.

Cleaning MAF sensor

I used brake-cleanerspray, after that a blow of clean air (computerstores) and you're done.
The same goes for the other sensor in your intake.
Just DO NOT touch the filament in the sensor.
Good luck, Tony.

So you are actually removing the maf sensor from the metal housing? The hayes manual says not to do that. I just wanted to check before potentially trashing the sensor. Thanks.

Cleaning MAF sensor

We have found that you don't have to take it out, but you can get at it alot easier with it out. I don't remove mine on my "99, but my friend with a "94 removes his.

Thumbs up Cleaning MAF sensor

Hi Guys,

Just cruisin' through the Explorer Forum when I saw this thread. You might want to read through this other thread from the 3.0L Forum which has some good info on subject of cleaning the MAF. (The MAF is pretty much the same setup on both the Ford 3.0L and 4.0Ls).

Info on Cleaning MAF & Thottle Body

Have a good one.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I found a security star bit (after visiting several stores) and cleaned the MAF sensor. I haven't been out for a ride yet, but I'll let you know if that takes care of the ping.
