Hi guys, I was told this is THE place to go for f150 info so here goes. BTW i've searched already but havnt found anything concerning my issue. I found alot about SD to MAF but I believe this is a MAF engine. What I'm trying to do is replace the tired 5.0 in my truck with a stroked 5.0 from a 93 mustang. It is a 5spd truck also. The replacement engine has a explorer (gt40) top end. My question is, can I use the computer thats in the truck and have it recalibrated or do I need a mustang computer. And does anyone make an adapter harness for the efi wiring? Or is it easier to modify the truck wiring. I'm just starting to research this and I'm not even sure of all the issues concerning this swap. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
The first thing is to find out for sure whether the truck is mass air or not.
The stock mass air PCM can handle some pretty significant changes but it has its limits. We need the specs on the stroker to tell you if it's going to work or not. Worst case you can have it re-programmed by a speed/tune shop.
Well the engine i'd like to put in it is a 331 with the explorer top end, 24# injectors, 70mm TB, and a "B" cam. Its installed in a 93 mustang now and runs well. And the truck has its original 95 5.0 5spd. I cant remember how it looks but I would think by 95 it would be MAF equipped. My problem is how do I hook this engine up electrically. Even though the wiring connectors are different they must be wired pretty much the same, I mean there both efi 5.0's just 2 yrs apart. I thought there might be an adapter harness already made for this. And I thought I might get away with using the trucks computer also. But maybe I'm wrong, thats why i'm here. Thanks for any input.
Like Andy said. Find out of its mass air or not. If it is then I would use the truck PCM and ALL the truck wiring. The truck TPS plug and 93 mustang are the same.
Just because it's a 95 does not mean it's mass air. Many 95 F-series trucks were still speed density. Any F-150 sold new in California in 1995 was mass air but everywhere else... maybe, maybe not.
No need for an adapter harness here the mustang engine will hook up to the truck engine harnes without much problem.. may have to move or extend some wires for the TPS or EGR(if equipped) but that's about it. The truck computer will have to be tuned for those injectors and MAF meter though so start shopping for a tuning system.. I'd suggest the Moates Quarterhorse.
Thanks for the info guys, I looked at the truck tonite and it is SD, the two tubes come off the TB and go right to the air filter, no MAF, I didnt realize they were still using SD that late. Well now this is going to be a little more involved than I thought I really would like to make it work though. Where's the best source of info on doing this? Are there any books written about it?
