Rough Feeling Clutch
I have a 1988 F-150 with the 300 six and a five speed manual. I noticed that my shifter, when moved back and forth in neutral, is sloppy feeling and rough. It goes into all the gears okay I guess. It feels real sloppy though in neutral. Someone said something about a bushing or something wore out. My friends has the same transmission, but it doesnt feel that way. Its firm and has a detent feeling at either end. Mine doesnt have that. Is there a bushing that is in there that needs replaced or is my friend hallucinating.

If it is an M5OD, then you may want to pull the gear shifter off and check to see if the two plastic(?) bushings are still there. Should have two (IIRC) tension washers in there too. The ball of the gear shifter pivots on two pins that are pressed into the side of the top plate. I bought a kit from Southern Gear that has all the required parts to fix my sloppy gear shifter problem. Ford dealership parts counter will tell you that you will need to purchase the entire top plate to replace the bottom bushing--that's because the pins need to be pressed out in order to get to the bottom one.
