I'm rebuilding my 2.8 in my 85 B2 and today I was trying to remove my exhaust manifolds. I broke off 2 of the studs. I have about 3/4" of stud sticking out of the head. I tried heating them and using vise grips with no luck. I was wondering if anybody has a trick they use to remove a broken stud? Is there a special tool I could get to remove them?? Thanks for any and all help.......Larry
there are two things that you can try. The first is a stud intaller/remover. It might do it, it might not. Or you can go to your local auto parts store, or a tool hop and tell them the size of bolt that is stuck in the head and ask for an EASY OUT. You might have to buy a set but I dout it. You can always have a machine shop take them out, but it will cost you.
Weld a new nut onto the remaining stud. The heat from the welder will get that puppy red hot very quickly, and usually frees it up. Use an impact wrench to remove the stud. I've never had this fail me.
Just make sure you get a good deep weld or the nut will break off.
